    Cooling down the chicken coop.

We shot to 97 F today. One of the groups of chickens was really unhappy. Gave them cold water and made sure they had plenty of shade. Finally I put frozen bottles of water in the coop and they were fine.

I will definitely take a look at those but it was windy so they had good air flow.

curious - what does a group of unhappy chicken do to show they are unhappy (I've never had chickens!)

Excellent question. They pant with their beaks open and raise their wings at the shoulder without spreading them in an effort to cool off. These are effectively signs that they're getting heat stroke.

I'll have to ask a co-worker how her chickens fared Monday; we also got up to 97 Monday. It's a little cooler today, all the way down to 92. Hope it's cooler your way.

It just dropped ten degrees. A freak thing but those huge temperature shifts are what they have trouble with. Just no time to adjust. I put four frozen bottles in there today and they were fine. It's interesting that they choose to be mostly inside when it's hot instead of in the run. It's weird. I hope your coworkers birds are OK.
