Just A Shell Of Her Former Self

    Aye Mates,
I was on me way home from training retrievers this morning and ran into this snappy little Mama looking for a place to deposit her eggs. First two weeks o' June is when these females seek sandy soils to lay their eggs in to incubate. I caught her taking a few moments of soaking up the sun's rays and enjoying the heat absorbed by the blacktop on the roadway.

    Cheers,
    Mikey

C'mon Fran, "snappy little Mama " should be a clue? Got it now?

I've seen a decline in turtles here in our area. So many new developments encroaching on their habitat. I've been here for 23 years, and regularly rescued turtles (even snappers) from the roads, but not one in the past 4 or 5 years. Just tells me the over all ecosystem is not healthy at all. Sad.

Nice o her to pose like that, on a suface where she shows up so clearly. I see mine on dirt and gravel and weeds. How big is she? Did she get across safely, did you help?

    Snowshoe,
I would estimate her carapace at approximately 15". I am a retired State Environmental Conservation Police Officer - she was surely transported well off of the road safely.

She is a pretty girl. We have several box turtles around here - actually found one last summer I believe walking up the road. her shell was painted so assuming she was someone's pet Our neighbor said he would take her to the lake he goes to when fishing.

While driving and see a turtle in the middle of the road if we can safely pull over and move them along to the other side we do.

I bet you were more careful than a friend of my OH. I guess just because he was a fur trapper he didn't necessarily know about turtles. The story goes he picked up a big one to help it move to safety and it twisted it's long neck out and back and crunched his kneecap.

OUCH / CRINGE. YE never hold them close to where they can get ye. I still have me knee caps and have relocated many turtles out o' harms way.

Sure looked like a snapper to me but was puzzled. Did not realize you had them in your area. I equate them to southern swamps.
