It's NOT My Job to Police Facebook

    What would you do?

A friend has posted one of those hoaxes about putting your PIN number in backwards to thwart an attempted robbery at an ATM. It's NOT TRUE. It's an idea that was comtemplated years ago but according to hoax sites was not implemented. It could be dangerous to try. Last time she posted something quite WRONG about how to remove ticks from dogs and I sent her a private message and she never corrected it. However this idea might get you killed.

I'm sure I wouldn't be able to remember my PIN number anyway, if someone attempted to rob me at an ATM. But regardless, should I heed the voice in my head saying, "It's DAngerous," and correct it? Or heed the voice in my head saying, "It's not my job to police Facebook?"

ETA: Here's the snopes and shows the very same message she posted.

I have FB friends who post weird and incorrect stuff as well. One person I'm related to. On occasion I have responded with a link to Snopes or another authority if I think it's really dangerous advice. I can't say my "helpful" response has been seen as such much of the time, especially when they've started their post with something along the lines of: "Oh, this is very important news!!! Please make sure you do this because I love all of you and this is urgent for you to do right now!!!" Maybe they feel like they've been made a fool of in front of all their many conspiracy theory loving very dear, dear friends. I've blocked posts from some people just so I don't have to keep seeing stuff that makes me crazy. Not unfriended, I just don't need to see all the stuff they repost URGENTLY!!! My elderly Mother gets tons of forwarded emails from friends and relatives as well- no Facebook for them. She's stopped reading their emails completely and will probably never know when her friends have died unless she notices they stop forwarding junk emails.

urgh. nothing annoys me more than really bad false information. especially the 'just copy text" stuff with zero link or supporting info. and I know people get annoyed with my corrections :P So I let a lot go.

I think that's what I will do. I used to panic and research all the crackpot stuff the OH forwarded to me that he had received from friends in email. When I asked once if he ever checked the stuff he said, "You do, so I send it to you." !!!!

It's hard not to check though. I'm a researcher by training, trade and avocation. Plus, on forums like this one if someone posts something wrong, dangerous we correct it in the dog's best interest.

I have friends that do the same thing on FB. DH's mom and sister are honestly some of the worst for doing it and it drives him NUTS. I'm one to just smh and keep scrolling but he's calls them out almost every time he notices.

His sister actually reposted that same exact ATM post. He commented with the same snopes link and the same "Please check sources before sharing" line he uses every time. I actually went back and replied to his saying, "Yeah... Never even heard of this before and I worked at a financial institution for years." She actually went back and deleted the post but sometimes she doesn't do that. She's fully honest on the fact that she doesn't check sources. She's responded to one of DH's replies saying, "Ah, well. I figure someone else will do that." Whaaat?! Lol. Smh.

Meh. People are just lazy and stupid sometimes. Sheep.

Depends on what it is. I can't stand fake news or totally biased news or conspiracy theorists so I either unfriend or unfollow those folks. And, those are the people who are also usually alarmists and post that kind of crap. Nope, not my job to police Facebook and, as Facebook is supposed to be enjoyable, I just cut the crap out of it as much as I can. Occasionally a reasonable person will post something and I might post a Snopes link or something, but it really depends on the situation.

I also reply with the Snopes link to BS stories. My pet peeve is the old ones that keep popping up: Starbucks CEO doesn't want Christians shopping in their stores... Coke removed the line "in God we trust... Drives me crazy.
