My youngest daughter's high school friend.

She had a friend who showed up in town today and last time she heard from him was last year. He had planned to hike the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine and was asking all of his friends to send him care packages that he could pick up along the way. Well, while he was hiking, he took pictures to make a book to give as a gift to all the people who helped him on his journey. The book ended up getting published! It took him 6 months and 14 days and whenever he could he would barter with people he met along the way with things he didn't need for things he did. He's planning a couple more hikes for the future from Mexico to Canada and from Florida to Nova Scotia. Here's a link to his ebook Amazon.com: Barter on Bridges eBook: Doug Gallagher: Kindle Store My daughter had a great visit with him and loved hearing all about his adventure he gave her a book and signed it. I think it was such an awesome adventure for someone to do.

That is awesome! I hope his future excursions are as much fun and as safe as his last.

Sounds like a true free spirit with a lot of creativity, and a great adventure; I'm impressed and, to be honest, a bit envious

Super cool....thanks for sharing. We just got back from NC and hiked small portions of the AT. I can't wait to read this now. I am currently reading "WILD" about a woman who hiked the Pacific Coast Trail.

My brother-in-law is doing the exact same thing right now! He started from the southern end on May 10th and plans to hike all the way to Mt. Kathadin. His original plan was to do it piecemeal meaning he would make it as far north as he could by August, then get a ride from my sister and head to Katahdin (we have family in Maine, so no big deal to her) then head back south from there to the place where my sister picked him up. But he is averaging about 20 miles a day so he's going to end at Mt. Katahdin.

He is also keeping a journal and plans to write a book at the end. He has tremendous support from my sister, me and my family, along with countless friends and we are sending him packages along the way. He has "trail angels" scattered throughout the length of the AT.

He said that was the best part of the trip, meeting so many different people and sharing experiences and helping each other.

You'll have to let us know how his adventure went when he is finished.
