    Anyone in HR here?

So many of you know I've been looking for a new job. I sent my resume in to a place that is rated one the top places to work in NJ and the HR guy called me. He is super super nice. he left me a vm because i Was of course (my luck) at work. Ha. So I called him back, he was gone for the day. Lovely. I left a very nice vm and said that I would try him in the morning. So I go to make the call and the darn phone is running out of battery and my car charger is nowhere to be found. I am super responsible but shit happens. What do I say??? I plan to call him again as soon as I get out of work today, do I need to explain why I am calling in the afternoon vs. morning like I said? ugh.

Can you call him from a pay phone on a break or at lunch? I would try to keep the say and do consistent.

If it's a large company (sounds like it is) he's probably super busy and won't notice morning vs. afternoon.

But, if you want to cover your bases just a quick "sorry, I wasn't able to call you until the afternoon" should suffice. No need to go into detail.

O.m.g. I didn't get to call him back today when I left work I ran to pick up my daughter from summer camp and something happened there that caused me a huge delay. When I got out of there it was 4:55. And China's appt. Was for 5 pm. After the issue at summer camp I just completely forgot. Now I'm going to call him at 9 in the morning and hope I reach him. I'm going with the truth and telling him today I had an emergency at my daughter's summer camp which caused my delay. Ugh.

I appreciate where you're coming from but just my two cents, I think that's TMI. He doesn't need to know anything about your family. It's only going to be a thing if you make a thing out of it. I don't mean to be harsh. It's just that I don't think that people really want to know these things anymore. My husband is completely neutral with clients. As far as they know, he just has "doctor's appointments" or "prior commitments". Short and sweet. Nothing personal and he gets the job done. They know he has chickens and that's about it. He has so much work right now that we are talking about cutting back.

In any event, I hope you get the job and, again, just my two cents.

I'm not in HR but as others mentioned, things happen. I would apologize and say something came up and couldn't get to call during working hours. He has your resume and can see you are currently working which makes it hard to call him back at a set time. When I was looking for another job and working, I usually was non-committal with the time I would return the call and just say I would call back ASAP. That way I didn't have to worry if something else came up.
