    Cats and heartworm meds

My cat, Sadu, is 6 years old. I've never heard of giving a cat heartworm meds, it's never been suggested to us, until now. The vet here recommends it. I'm wondering if any of you with cats use a heartworm preventative? Scam or legit? I bought a dose of revolution at the vet but have not applied it yet.

I started giving Tucker Revolution this summer. I do let him outside in the garden when I am home. From what I have heard, heartworm meds for cats aren't popular just because pet owners don't spend a lot of money on their cats. If yours is strictly indoors, I don't think it would be necessary.

My previous Vet had me giving it to our four cats but I've since found the incidence rate for heartworm in cats is even lower here that it is for dogs. I no longer give it, not recommended by current Vet.

I live in the midwest, and growing up my family always had cats...they never recommended HW preventative, and they didn't get tested for it either. Indoor cats.

Mine are indoor cats, no need for it.

I don't have cats but, naturally, had to look this up while waiting for a workman to arrive. Here's one thing I found about cats' susceptibility to HW. Which Cats Are Susceptible?

Although outdoor cats are at greater risk of being infected, a relatively high percentage of cats considered by their owners to be totally indoor pets also become infected. Overall, the distribution of feline heartworm infection in the United States seems to parallel that of dogs but with lower total numbers.

From American Heartworm Society | Feline Heartworm

I give heart worm preventive to my dogs year-round. We travel to NC fairly often and the incidence is pretty high there.

Thanks, all. Sadu is an indoor only cat. Also what surprised me was when I asked if the vet needed me to stay for her to draw blood for a heartworm test she said no. I thought that was weird, given that we have to have a negative test result to get a script for our dogs.

Anyway, I need to go over those links smartrock sent with my husband tonight and decide what to do. I don't like dumping extra chemicals on my pets so I am leaning toward no, and my husband has been saying no since the beginning. But the vet did say, all it takes is that one mosquito...and with the dogs were are opening and closing doors more often to let them in and out than we would if it was just us. Of course, the boys are on heartgard.

The boys go to a different vet and I am going to ask her tomorrow what she would recommend (second opinion). I will let you all know what she says.

    Thanks again!
