I swear by thesweethome.com for their product reviews. I don't have the one they recommend (the shark navigator) but my brother and my mom both have it and they love it.
I swear our yellow lab sheds more than our two old chocolate labs and springer spaniel all put together! This summer it's the amazing amount of fine hairs, as opposed to the spring and fall big sheds. I have a broom and am sweeping the hardwood, but it really gets ground into the oriental rugs in between visits from our cleaners.
Any recommendations for an inexpensive vacuum that works well on pet hair? We are lucky enough to have a cleaning lady weekly, so I don't need a $600 heavy duty vacuum, just something I can pull out every other day or so to get rid of the dog hair in between her visits.

We've have a Hoover bagless designed for pet hair, only paid $100 for it and it works like a champ. Hoover® Air™ Steerable Pet Bagless Vacuum Bought it a the Direct Tool Factory Outlet 3 years ago.
We also have a Shark Shop Shark Rocket Ultra Light Bagless Upright Vacuum at Lowes.com that we keep upstairs for the bedrooms. It's really nice to use on stairs, as the center piece comes out make it very compact and light. The only issue I have is it fills up really fast with the dog hair, and I'll have to empty is a couple times when using it.
I'm really liking the shark navigator.
I can't say enough good things about the Shark Rocket. Every time I vacuum I'm amazed by what it picks up.
