Police asked me a strange question.

Called 911 because of debris on a 50 mph road and it was rush hour. Drivers were swerving into oncoming traffic instead of going to the shoulder. Very dangerous. Explained the situation and there was a pause. Since the situation was near a very popular set of town attractions, I gave my address so that he knew I was local and knew what I was talking about in terms of location. He asked me for my name. Then he asked me for my phone number. Gave both. Then he stated my birthday and asked me if that was it. I laughed.

Why is he asking me this? Frankly, it's not even relevant who I am. There's a bunch of stuff in the middle of the road. Why is it so important who called it in?

Well, since you offered the information initially, at least your address, I guess he was looking online as you spoke and was just verifying who he was speaking to. I can't see why it would matter in that situation either. Just get the stuff out of the road, Dude!

I think I'm sensitive because this is my 50th. Don't really need that to be pointed out. I was tempted to ask if he was going to send me a card.

I think they do that so if it is anyone making a prank call, they know where you live!

Is it possible to make a crank call to 911 w/out them knowing which number called? I thought you were going to say he asked if you were talking on bluetooth or holding your phone near your ear, or something so they could ticket you. After all, they can fine you for talking on your cell (net + for the department) vrs. dealing with the issue (net neg. for them.)

I know. My cynicism knows no bounds. I'm thoroughly ashamed of myself.

That's it! I looked it up! Drivers 18 and under can't use a cell phone while driving in MA. That's why he asked. That really threw me.

Ah, so if you were a cute, perky blonde 17 year old doing your civic duty, reporting a road hazard that was threatening life and limb, they'd nail you.

      Makes sense to me.

You can't be 17. I think that this is because you can't have a driver's license in MA unless you're 18 or older so basically if you have a learner's permit, you have to pull over to make a call. I know for a fact that they were tracking my location on the phone so they knew I was moving. There is actually a bill for no cell phone use at all when driving. Hasn't passed though.

My guess would be either that there's another "janedoe" in your area (I get asked my DOB at the dermatologist's and endocrinologist's office when I call in....there's another Barbara Surname around) or else they suspect that someone is using your more commonly known name/address but wouldn't know your DOB. I'm prone to go with the latter.

X2. T'was also not long ago that a police officer got out of his patrol cruiser to clear debris at the bottom of an entrance ramp and was shot to death in an ambush scenario. The debris had been purposely planted there to lure a motorist out of their car, it just so happened the victim was a police officer. Cop's need to be defensive in everything they do as a matter of officer survival. I lived the job for many years and I am lucky to be here amongst the living.
