My sister and family live on a family cattle farm in NW Ohio. Fair time is the biggest time of the year for the small town. My nephews (13 and 11) and my niece (9) show steer. Their grandpa picks out steer upon completion of each fair for the next year. The kids take care of them all year and prep for the next fair. (yes, they go to market at the end of fair --$$ goes to college funds). For me, I've been a vegetarian since 92 so I don't like think about it. :-)
Anyways - these pictures are just too darn cute not to share. The kids get to the fair at 0530 each morning and clean the stalls and bathe the steer. Long days. Mr. Dalton (11 yr old) took advantage of some down time and decided to nap. My sister couldn't find him so she went into the barn and found him with the steer. These are two separate instances. The two boys got first in showmanship and my little niece got 4th (she's in the same class as her 11 yr old bro).
How wonderful and precious! Those kids spend a lot of time with their animals. It must be hard to let them go.

This guy is the exception - he was brought up from TN for my niece and she gets to keep him. He is not going to market. I really try not to think about it because it really bothers me. Bless them for the strength and understanding they have toward the family business.
