    Thank you, Berna.

    JC001, much appreciated.

The National Weather Service posted this on Twitter this morning: "This event is unprecedented & all impacts are unknown & beyond anything experienced. Follow orders from officials to ensure safety. #Harvey pic.twitter.com/IjpWLey1h8
    8:44 AM - 27 Aug 2017".

It is a dire situation. I saw reports of 7, 12, 20 inches of rain in the 24 hours ending this morning and already 8, 12, 17 inches more today. Traffic lights on major roadways like the Sam Houston Parkway are usually, say, 15 to 18 feet above ground. I saw a photo of a traffc light post with water less than a foot below the lights.

I read unconfirmed reports of 2000 water rescues by noon today, with many, many more since. The Coast Guard sent helicopters from New Orleans to help, and I think the National Guard sent helicopters from Dallas-Fort Worth to do the same. Local civilians with boats and high water capable vehicles have been asked to help, and Louisianans with boats are on their way.

I have donated to the Red Cross; that is only my first donation to a relief agency. I expect that RedRover will be asked to help and will donate when they deploy (disclosure: I am a RedRover volunteer). Please consider helping by donating to the reputable organization of your choice. This catastrophic event will continue into the coming week. Recovery will take months and years.

Boggles my mind the amount of rain and destruction. Went through hurricane David while living in Savannah, a direct hit. Never heard of David, that's because it was not a really bad one, the worse being without power for over a week and knowing what that was like.

Waiting for emergency animal shelters to be set up so I can send linens. From a friend on Facebook who lives in LA, animal shelters and being cleared out by the van full, heading further north, so that they have room for all the animals that will be coming in. One town even did a cattle/sheep drive through the middle of town to move them to higher ground. Done the old fashion way, on horseback.

Prayers being sent to all those involved.

My thoughts and prayers go out to each and everyone during this time, it is unbelievable the photos coming out of Texas. Will continue to keep the residents and the rescuers in my thoughts and prayers.

I had wondered about the cattle if the owners would take responsibility and get them to higher ground, happy they did so here as I still see the pictures of pigs left to drown during a flood along with cattle and horses.

Jollymolly, I feel bad and hug you.

Berna, Houston's floodwaters are not rising or at least rising as fast. Unfortunately there are cities not far east which are now experiencing similar flooding. Most all of these places will be flooded for days if not weeks.

POPTOP, thank you for being ready to help.

labsnewfy, I like to think that livestock owners are conscentious enough to do and keep doing as much as they can, without endangering their own lives too much.

Such an awful time for so many. Cars, homes, possessions ruined. Jobs, businesses on hold, perhaps gone. Unable to pay the mortgage, rent, property tax, consumer debt. Cities, counties, parishes with damaged or destroyed infrastructure when they have trouble affording maintenance on what they have. Governments, social assistance agencies, the credit/debt/lending industry, businesses - people - will be greatly tested for years. A lot of help will be needed.

The Texas Tribune has a page listing sources providing assistance if you need it and how to help if you can. I encourage you to visit it (scroll down to view ways to help). Slate.com has this partially overlapping list. There are undoubtedly many other organizations offering and accepting help. The Sacramento [California] Bee also has a good list.

We have helped by donating money. Faye mentioned going there later this year to do what we can. We may do that.

This is such a long term issue. It's not at all like a rural area. The water is not going anywhere fast and there are so many toxins in a city environment with a dense population. The destruction is much worse. We need to think about years to come, as you are.

    Yes, this will take years.

An observation. While Houston has been the centre of attention it isn't the only place badly affected. Harvey made landfall at the coastal towns of Rockport, Fulton, Port Aransas, Aransas Pass (where I spent many very pleasant days). They were badly damaged.

As Houston was so direly affected by the awful deluge, other places were seriously flooded - Smithville, the Columbia towns, Brazoria, Dickinson, Baytown, La Porte, Port Arthur, Beaumont, other cities, towns, crossroads that I can't think of. I live in a small town and am deeply sympathetic to what small towns go through. In some ways their struggle is worse - without enterprising reporting by locals or by national reporters who dive deep into the story, so-called small places are lost in the shuffle.
    --------------
There's been some stuff in the media and social media about how 'if this had been done' and 'if that had been done' the loss of life and property would not be as great. I think it's impossible to say. My belief is that it's best to accept what is and try to learn lessons.
    -----------------
Finally, a few stories that reinforce my belief in the essential goodness and generosity of people.

A bunch of guys banded together to save a dog from being washed away.

A report by the Guardian describes volunteers and organizations helping care for what I will call 'Harvey animals'. Disclosure: I'm a RedRover volunteer, not on this deployment though.

Austin Pets Alive! is only one organization helping. Apparently every animal that had been in their direct care is now in foster care, freeing much needed space for Harvey animals. This generosity has been repeated throughout Texas, Louisiana, and across the States.

Two guys save a horse that, for whatever reason, was left in its corral. I enjoyed the dad's instructions to his son. There's a short bit at the end where they move cattle.

I can't find a video I saw on Monday(?) and have to paraphrase the conversation. A reporter was at the edge of a flooded freeway and a civilian was launching his boat. The reporter asked if this was his boat and the man replied 'yes sir'. The reporter asked what he was doing and the man replied 'I'm going to save some lives'.

Again, can't find the video and have to paraphrase. Another reporter was on a boat reporting that an elderly couple were in their flooded house with their daughter, who had persuaded them to leave. The elderly man was helped into the boat. Then the reporter said he was putting the mike down (and I think asked for the feed to go back to the studio) because the lady of the house was distressed and might be more comfortable without TV coverage. What remarkable compassion.

A parting observation. I'm pleased to see that the Houston Astros won their first game in Houston after Harvey.
