Not for me, us, any loved ones, or a dog. For the state of Texas and the people on and near its coast. As you may know I lived in Texas until 2007, when I emigrated to Canada. I still have family and friends there, and follow events there.

I am a bit of a weather geek and have been glued to weather web sites much of the day.

I watched as Tropical Storm Harvey became Hurricane Harvey very quickly - in a matter of hours. It will likely become a major hurricane overnight (winds of 120mph or 193kph) and will likely remain at that strength until landfall Friday night. It could strengthen even more than that. Usually when a hurricane comes onshore it keeps moving inland and recovery can begin in a day or so.

That fairly quick ability to begin recovering may be unlikely this time. This has the potential to be bad.

Most forecast models show Harvey stalling north of Corpus Christi, just off, very near, or just inland from the coast. So in some places hurricane or near hurricane condistions could last from early tomorrow morning until Tuesday. Worse yet, some models take Harvey back offshore where it may strengthen again, then back onshore somewhere farther north.

Some places will get 24 inches (60cm, yes that's cm) of rain in the next several days. A few places may get as much as 36 inches (91cm).

My family and friends should be OK. They are either already out of the way or know enough to be preparing now. Please think good thoughts for the people in harm's way, and for decision makers to have clear minds. Consider being prepared to donate to the Red Cross or the reputable relief organization of your choice.

Someone we know professionally has to fly in to pick up her daughter tomorrow. We're very concerned about this plan.

Consider them sent. My parents live on the Gulf Coast of Florida, and this is a constant worry for me. Hope all those potential affected get through this problem free.

I lived on the Third Coast in two different cities. I was a hurricane repellent. Lived in Galveston, Rita swung east and hit Lake Charles, another went down to Padre. Lived in Corpus, hurricane hit Galveston. Where's landfall supposed to be and I'll drive the dogs down there

janedoe, depends on where this person is flying into and when they fly out. Houston area, San Antonio, likely OK until about Saturday afternoon or night. Anywhere south and east of those two cities, not the best idea.

Thanks barry. As awful as the extended horrible conditions will be, the stupendous rainfall may be the real problem especially if it reaches up into the Hill Country which is flash flood alley. There's a system off the FL Gulf coast that may intensify. I hope your parents are not in the way.

garball, lol. Rita and the 2005 hurricane season is what got me into dog rescue, involved with United Animal Nations now RedRover, and working at preparing for events like this.

I find it hard to even imagine 2 or 3 feet of rain falling. And lets face it, you're hands are tied, nothing you can do but prepare your home/property and get your family and yourself out of harms way. My prayers to all effected. Stay safe.

Prayers and positive thoughts out for the safety of all involved. I volunteered for relief efforts after the landfall of Hurricane Sandy and the devastation was unlike anything I had ever witnessed. I volunteered in the Rockaway's and the place looked like a war zone. Ironically the State of New York was charging us an outlandish toll to make bridge crossings whilst we were bringing food and other needed supplies into the area for people that had lost everything they owned.

Mother Nature can be viciously cruel.

We heard that on the news, two feet of rain, and supposed it must have been a typo or the announcer made a mistake. Nope, it's for true. Too bad it can't rain a little bit in BC where the forest fires are the worst they've ever been. Good thoughts for folks braving the elements everywhere.
