    Final Expenses

This morning Bill and I completed the last (hopefully) of the big expenses before he retires. We prepaid our funeral expenses. Still have a little paperwork to do to get all instructions and wishes down to be followed. Not something a lot of folks want to think about but needs to be done. Consider, every 8-10 years funeral costs double. Our contract is now locked in and no additional costs can be added unless whoever wants to do flowers. Ours is simple since we are going to be interned at Arlington National Cemetery. No family feuding, no fussing after we're gone, we've got it all down in detail. With the Dignity network, for military veterans, if we move the contract goes with us to the closest Dignity funeral home to where we are, no added expense. Kinda morbid but does take a load off our minds and a huge weight off those who are left behind to manage the estate. Like wills, this is something that needs to be considered by all.

Bill can now contemplate when he is going to retire. I told him not until the next new huge Lego set comes out, LOL!

What a gift to your family this is. My husband's mother had pre-planned and pre-paid for all her final arrangements and it made it so much easier for the family. Her family is very small and there wouldn't have been any arguments among family but the decisions had all been made and we weren't left looking at each other saying, "Now what?" Good work, you two!

Well done. Settling these details now means what you want done will be done, and your family will have fewer things to tend to during what will be a very vusy time for them.

I think that it's morbid only if one chooses to think of it that way.

My parents did the same thing. Actually, my Dad passed first, and after my Mom passed, enough interest had accumulated that we actually got money returned to us. When the time comes, your family will thank you, so may details we did not have to deal with when our grief had just begun. It was probably the best gift my parents could have given myself and my two brothers. Well done, and you know that your requests will be honored.

And speaking of lego's, have you seen the "Christmas Story" house? I don't believe it is in production yet. I don't Lego, but for that I may just have to. Love the movie and have been to the house several times.

The rep at the funeral home said he has seen family members almost come to blows over choice of flowers - WHAT! No thank you.

My parents bought their crypts and my mom pre-arranged and pre-paid. I was surprised there were a few things not included or were over the maximum covered since costs had gone up, but it was so much easier than when my dad passed. There was no squabbling but the decision in a time of grief was overwhelming.

what a great gift to give your family.

LOL I was going to ask you if you had seen it yet ;-) I thought specifically of you when I heard about it.

One of the things I am not sure if you thought about, have you stipulated in your will about your dogs that are left. We actually covered this in a Dog Scout class and it really gave me a lot to think about. I have it stipulated in my will 20k will go to the caretakers of Hemi, it is also specified who they will be. This will cover things like him still being able to go to dog scout camp, any medical bills, insurance, his continued monthly Barkbox. All this is specified so there is no question. Then there is a 3rd party another friend that is required to make yearly reviews to make sure my wishes with Hemi are being maintained. Upon Hemi's death what ever money is left will go to various doggy charities in his name.

There are reasons behind every decision, the odd one being the money when Hemi passes the money does not go to the person that took care of him. One of the things I learned is that sad as it is many people have done this in the past and the dogs meet premature deaths within a few months after their owners. Then all that money goes to whomever had the dog last. While I fully trust where Hemi is going as he would go to a wealthy family where money shouldn't be an issue. This hopefully will make sure that Hemi lives a long life, all the money for his care and happy life is provided and no decisions about him are based on financial gain from a human as that money left over will go to charity that would make me and Hemi both smile at and provide help for many other dogs.
