Hey cat people...I need some suggestions!

Last fall when I went to Italy and hired a house/pet sitter, after several days once the cat got used to the new person, toward the end of my three-week trip, my cat peed on the bed twice. I mention it being toward the end of the trip because the cat will hide under the bed when strange people are over and by this time she was out and about and friendly with the pet sitter, so she wasn't stuck in the bedroom when she decided to pee on the bed.

I feel confident that her litter box was cleaned because it did not smell when I got back and the litter I left, just in case, was not opened. I also saw lots of cat litter bags in the garbage when I got home (I have every other week trash pick-up). I keep a deep litter box and just scoop until it's low then dump the litter, clean the box and add new litter.

I'm going away again next month for two weeks and will have someone staying at my house watching the animals. Any suggestions about what I can do to keep the bed cat-pee-free? I'm not sure that a person can keep the cat out of the room as she'll be spooked and hangs out under the bed, her safe place. A tarp for the bed, maybe?

I have 3 cats and if I had that issue, I would get one of those blue tarps. I would put it under a fitted sheet because if not, kitty will have blast playing with the noisy tarp and it would not be on the bed for long. Put up all the other bed items. Cats are so complex it's so difficult to try and figure out why the do what they do at times. I've had cats the last 18 yrs. I love them as much as I love the pups. :-)

    Good luck.

    I agree.

Who knows why she did that...maybe she was annoyed that you stayed away so long....maybe something spooked her in the box and so she avoided it...???

My first Basenji peed on my mother's bed after the first time Mom scolded her for something. That was definite revenge and earned Sandy a closed door to that room. She slept with me and my bed stayed dry.

One of our cats came to us with irritable bowel disease/syndrome. Brindle didn't like to use the box for peeing but she'd pee next to the box. She'd also try to outrun the pain of her bowel movements. Do you know that if a cat is racing around the house and hits the back of a free-standing couch or chair at just the right time/angle, you get poop on your ceiling. Trust me on that. We referred to that as "having the house Brindled".

The cat is three + years old and has never peed anywhere besides her box other than when this woman slept in my bed. I have left her overnight and I have left for a long weekend and had someone come in and check on her and clean her box every other day. It was a year ago and she hasn't done it since. I think it's safe to assume it had to do with me being gone a long time plus a stranger in the bed, so I would guess that it'll happen again this time and I'd like to avoid it.

    Tarp!

Isn't it nice to know, though, that you're missed?

Why can't she just swallow a sock or rip up cardboard like Linus?

I don't like some of those one star reviews...mostly the one that says it's not waterproof.

If you're willing to spend that much, I'd go for a couple of cheap but thick bed spreads and one of those blue tarps...or a thick blanket under one of the bed spreads, that may be better.

Maybe she'd use a litter box on the bed.... (sorry)

I wouldn't spend a lot since it's not typical behavior. Tarp, blue or thinner plastic used for painting, under a washable blanket or the fitted sheet if the cat "burrows" under the blankets. Everything on top should be washable so leave off any heavy or nice top covers and just take precautions to not let it soak through to the actual mattress.
