We dodged a bullet. I may be psychic.

I was supposed to take Nikki and Fran to our holistic vet today. She's in a different state and it takes us an hour and a half to get there. Her office is usually closed on Fridays. My husband hadn't registered this and had scheduled an oil change on our 10 year old Camry. He told me this on Wednesday night and I asked him to reschedule. I woke up in the middle of the night and decided on the spot to keep the car appointment and cancel the vet. Called the vet's office at 3 am and left a message.

My husband got a call from the mechanic this morning. A bolt had sheared off and fallen into the engine block. He said if we had driven it just a few more miles, we would have had total engine failure.

    I guess I'm just psychic.

Has the bolt been replaced yet? That sounds a bit fishy to me.

Might be worth asking for the Toyota part number that will be used to replace it. Then ask a Toyota parts desk if that part no could shear off as described.

Sorry, I am always skeptical when mechanics find things just in time.

Wow, that sounds scary! Is this a reliable mechanic that you trust? I don't think they are all out to get you but I would definitely want to check it out and see for myself, especially if it is an expensive repair. So glad my DH can do most auto maintenance and repairs himself!

I appreciate that. Toyota screwed up our car a while ago and declared it totaled. We went to a highly recommended mechanic who fixed it. He has taken great care of it ever since. The car has over 200,000 miles on it so we're not really surprised. These kinds of things happen eventually. Everything is just starting to glitch. I suspect that this was what was actually in the back of my mind when I decided to get the car checked out before I drove it that far with the dogs.

I should also say that he restores extremely expensive antique cars and loves his job.

I guess you can't really call that a lucky break, can you? Lucky unbreak. Lucky it didn't break earlier too.

There's something about intuition and gut feels. It's wise to pay attention to them.
