It was bound to happen. A neighbor story.

After seven years of thwarting my "new" neighbors in their efforts to take over or make decisions about our property, including but not limited to an attempt to annex our driveway (seriously, that happened, they had a family member who was a lawyer), and twelve years of blocking another neighbor from farming and stripping our property while demanding $10K for their "improvements", they have all given up on getting the upper hand on us.

Now they have turned on each other.

They have come to realize that owning historic homes is not all fun and games. It requires a serious long term effort and investment unless you have a couple of hundred grand lying around for a one time effort so their homes have started to deteriorate. One house is a tear down. Another has cedar shingle siding that they thought they could replace but there's semi-rotten siding underneath it so of course contractors won't give them a solid estimate because they don't know what's back there. Another has a tree issue that may have compromised the foundation. Another used such cheap materials after a complete overhaul that, ten years in, it's all coming apart again. The paint actually went from yellow to a sickly green and their fence just fell over one day.

Now they are at war. It's a game of whose house is more of a drain on property values. They come to me and it's "can you review this letter", "can you talk to so and so about doing work on his house", "my wife is so upset about so and so", "why doesn't he just sell".

So I guess that's it and we get left alone. Until they sell and we get new neighbors . . .

All things considered, I'd still keep them at arm's length.

I appreciate that. My standard response is "I've already said what I've had to say to (him/her/them)".

You would think I was the driveway guy's best friend. He's convinced I can influence the guy whose lawn I've been mowing but I can't and honestly believe that that house won't be put up for sale until he passes. Driveway guy is so worked up about the state of that house and I'm thinking that his house doesn't look much better. I'm also thinking that I don't care No skin off my back. It's not like these are dangerous situations so what does it matter?

I wish it was more of a popcorn moment but it's just kind of depressing instead.
