    Gardening question.

Does anyone know what the white stuff is? I'm growing arugula sprouts in an aquarium. I just pick some and eat them raw but I'm concerned about the white stuff and don't even know what to google. I'm using organic potting soil and plant food and a grow light.

I figured it was mildew or mold from the humid aquarium, so I googled a few terms and got this site. It looks like it is actually white fungus, and the solution is better ventilation of the seedlings/sprouts, and make sure that it isn't covered by a lid or plastic.

Thank you Shelley. I don't have a cover on the aquarium but since they're just sprouts, I only put a few inches of soil in there so ventilation would be an issue. I found an old hair dryer and put it on low. Lesson learned.

If you want just sprouts instead of full plants, put the seeds in a large mason jar with some water, cover and in a few days you have a crop.

Mold and fungus are hard things to deal with. When we did indoor winter gardening there were fans going all the time to help move the air around to prevent this. I have never done it in an aquarium but having fans going is a good idea. You know seriously have you ever looked into some books on indoor growing of Marijuana. While i know your not growing it, or maybe you are they do have the whole indoor growing nailed down to a science. There are several books on it even classes you can take on it. Here in Michigan having legal medical marijuana. I know there are several classes and stuff at colleges specifically on indoor growing. The Medical Marijuana market is really weird here. You can not grow for your self. You have to have what is called a caregiver, who is a licensed grower of Marijuana. However a Caregiver I think can only be a caregiver to 5 people. So operations have to be small and limited. However this leads to a lot of caregivers.

Thank you Jeff. Marijuana is actually legal here now for personal use. A huge commercial greenhouse is planned for a town near Cape Cod. You can have up to six plants. I do not have plants. However, a certain e-book may have been provided with a certain purchase and it sounds like that would be extremely helpful. I'll see if any of the continuing education groups around here have classes. Or the botanical garden. Because that would be really funny.

The blow dryer is turning out to be useful. It's backing off.
