"French River Fur" - A photograph.

    Aye Mates,

Whilst photographing a small family group o' Canada Geese this afternoon on the French River, I saw a flash o' movement upstream, a lone mink playing on an icy shelf extending from the far embankment outward into the river. I had the opportunity to observe and photograph the mink for nearly 10 minutes before it slid effortlessly into the frigid riffles.

How exciting! Do you find many around you? I've never seen one in the wild.

Oh, neat. I've seen a few....from babies to ones the size of yours...at our local park. And I'll see their pawprints going over one of the wooden bridges when they've just exited the lake and still have ample water to track. It's always a thrill because they're so secretive.

Having spent most o' me lifetime deeply involved with wildlife conservation and wayyyy more time in the great outdoors than the average person, I distinctly remember each sighting I have made on wild mink. My first was as a young Boy Scout doing a survival trip and sighting the mink darting in and out of rip rap along a stream bank as I was catching crayfish and frogs to eat.

Mink can seemingly be very secretive most times, and at other times almost ignore the presence of a human as if they think themselves to be invisible.

I have had seven sightings over nearly fifty years, three were very fleeting, and four were longer in duration. Yesterday was the first time I had a chance to photograph one. 👍

If I've seen one, and I doubt I have, I probably thought it was an otter or a beaver. But a beaver would be more rotund and the tail less furry, wouldn't it? Nice shots!

Beaver are much larger and have a completely different body structure and a wide, flat, tail. An otter is generally a much bigger animal, also having a much different body structure.
