Angry Got laid off! After getting recruited!

I started working at this Tech start-up in March right before I graduated college. The company was just purchased by a giant cooperation this past weekend and told us they are not keeping the staff that developed the tech. Our last day is Thursday, there only 8 people who work there. When I got recruited, I made sure to ask if they were planning on selling sometime soon, and they said not for at least a 1-1.5 years since were still very small. Well f' that, it didn't happen. Now it's back to the drawing board and figure out what I'm going to do in life, and make ends meet for now.

Companies have a definite "eF you very much for a job well done" attitude don't they. It's just a stumble, you got the drive to get out of this. I know it's hard but you can do it.

The good news is that you have some experience, unlike other recent college grads. Sorry about the sale, though. It happens to people who work their whole lives at a company until it is sold one day, and they are out of a job.

You will find another job soon!

Don't worry about it man! As Charlotte said, you have some solid experience, the tech niche is always looking for talent and I believe you'll be good. Don't feel so dramatic - shit happens and that's life. Ain't nothing to it but to get over it and scout for new opportunities. Think of it as the end of the 1 year that you mentioned as prospect ending or sth like that.

I, myself, being a graphics designer have been laid off a fair amount of times and always got through it. Just be positive. Try to stay productive in your job/prospects search and if you work hard and smart you can't fail. Wishing you the best of luck!

I'm so sorry. Just one piece of advice from the wife of someone who gets laid off seven times in the last fourteen years.: Never believe the company about something like that and check the severance policy before you take the job.

It's frustrating but do keep an eye out when you go to work for a company. If they can sell and make a profit, they will. Look at what you can get out of it, including recommendations.

All good thoughts on your job search.

Yea, I'm trying to be positive. It just sucks, but I realize life goes on and I just need to move on and find the new door that opens up. Goal for the new job is find another place I get to bring Emma in everyday.

Now I least have 6 day weekend for the fourth! haha

So sorry. It's a horrible feeling. I'd never lost a job in my life until the business sold out to a hospital who was absorbed by a corporate hospital. Yep, they laid me off. If I wanted a job I would have had to travel to downtown Chicago. No thanks, don't want to spend 3-4 hours on the road or on a train.

First stop - unemployment. Get that going so you have some income.

Update your resume. You are in a good field so things should move fast for you.

Unfortunately not the start to a weekend holiday you had expected. It's really a surprise and discouraging I'm sure; but hopefully you'll get good references from your work there and it does show experience as you go job-searching.

If you are open to a change of scenery, you might want to consider Portland, Oregon where I live. Tech, both large companies and small start-ups, are everywhere here. It's considered pretty routine for a lot of businesses being open to employees bringing their dogs. And labs are almost the default breed of dog around here. Here is a link to quite an in-depth article covering the tech scene here as well as Portland culture in general.

Sorry about that, stay positive. Will you get paid out any vacation? Do you qualify for unemployment ?

We're getting paid the rest of the week, but don't have to go in which is nice. I have no idea about unemployment. I need to do research on that.
