I know someone who has Great Pyrenees. The owner feels compelled to bring them in during -20C weather; even then they prefer to stay in the marginally heated mud room.

I look at this cold weather as a good thing. The past several years it has been way above normal, ticks and other bad things have moved north. Even at dog scout camp, when we first started going we never had to worry about ticks. The last couple years have been bad. So I say let it freeze good and hard this year. Kill off some of the nasty things.

Sorry Jeff, but I have to burst your bubble! Ticks don't die when it's cold, they just sleep. Unfortunately!

My friend kept 3 ticks in a jar and after 3 weeks (!) they were still alive.

Cockroaches and ticks will survive the Apocalypse, believe me.

Don't spoil my dreams of this cold killing off all the nasties.

Actually cold can kill them, especially this cold. your talking -10f or -23 celcius. Any that are exposed will die off. The problem is the ones that have burrowed down into the ground for protection. It not going to kill all the ticks but its going to kill a few of them. Its also going to kill off a lot of the host that ticks feed on, so many ticks will die in the spring when they can't find hosts and can't reproduce. Provided it stays colder longer then the ticks will also stay dormant longer which means when they do come out to finally feed they have less time and less hosts, this can shrink the population.

Last time it was so cold here was in 2012, so I will be patiently waiting for the city to spray against ticks when spring starts!

I’ve about had enough of this cold snap. One more day and we tie a hundred year old record of seven days in a row with the high temp below 20F. Cassie absolutely despised me for putting her in boots. Twice this week her paws froze and I had to stop and clear them of ice. She sulked after the walk for a few hours.

Jeff, the dog camp should "employ" a host of guinea fowl. I hear they are great at clearing out a large number of ticks.

Have only been going out for about 5 minutes at a time. Elle would like to stay longer but I don't want her getting cold or over doing it. One lap of the deck or one lap of the yard that is ploughed. She takes a little more time to find that special spot. The other two don't seem to mind staying in at all. The wind is wicked here today.

Ram has been less than thrilled with having to wear his boots everyday. Yesterday after having done a few laps around the coffee table with him I had to resort to bribing him. Now he gets a treat after he lets me put each boot on.
