      they can spray for ticks?

Ticks were not a major thing here years ago. I mean some people in the rural areas or who walked in very rural areas had to be careful but not it's crazy. the number of cases of lyme has really gone up. Scary for humans too (diagnosis and treatment for humans is pretty crap here). Spraying must have side effects though (toxic and all that)?

Yes they spray public parks and some of the more “urban” forests every year, because of Lymes. Never heard anyone had any issues health wise. The nasty things ticks carry scare me much more to be honest.

Ways to Avoid or Kill Deer Ticks

One collateral damage mentionned at the link is critters who feed on ticks will lose a food source. It doesn't say anything about those critters being slowly poisoned by eating poisoned ticks (or whatever the insect you spray for is) but I have to wonder. If we get mercury and PCBs from eating farmed and wild game why not also from tick spray? Any turkey hunters here?

You bring up a good point.
