I'm surprised you didn't find some new critters to join your menagerie snuggled in for the winter under the leaves!
Our house is shaped like a capital I. One half of our basement is storage. We have giant rolling metal shelving storage all around the outside walls and the floor is concrete so it's great for bringing in the animals when it's super cold but we don't generally spend much time down there.
Extreme wind hit today and my husband noticed an appreciable drop in temperature in the indentation that is the middle of the I. So he poked around behind the shelving units and found a snow drift inside the basement. He poked around a bit more and discovered that the entire lower sill on the window behind the unit had both rotted and been chewed through. So the wind blew the snow through the opening which was about three inches. He fashioned a new one out of wood we had lying around and blocked the opening but then we shoveled out the snow and there was about six inches of leaves underneath that. Clearly this has been going on for months.
Unbelievable. We need to spend more time in the basement.

Wonder if you might have noticed a cold spot upstairs too, right above the one in the basement? Or maybe you did but you thought that was the haunted spot?

We've had so many problems in the past because of the holes in the house and no insulation (now taken care of) that I initiated a year round poisoning program. There is a massive set of tunnels under the house. I put leaves and small stones in the tunnel entrances and whenever I see activity, I poison it and board it up. As soon as the poison is gone, I start over again. It's been very effective and we have seen only a couple of mice this year. Rodents have done so much damage to the house over the years that I need to get a mason out here to take care of the brick and our stone wall. I'm amazed by what these things can chew through.
It's right beside the chimney. The fireplace is a little drafty anyway so I just figured it was that. Besides, I've watched a LOT of horror movies and I trust the dogs to let me know if a poltergeist shows up. The goats are pretty hyperaware too. In fact, I dare something to show up. I would get an expert out here so fast. The dogs would be barking, the goats would be making a racket. No one would be getting any sleep.
We got lucky. If we hadn't crated the goats right there, I doubt we would have even gone down there yesterday.
We're actually doing really well with projects. Winter has been relatively short here and we're getting 54 on Friday. I get an awful lot done when I don't have to slog through snow and the ground isn't frozen.
We once had a short-term rental with a mostly finished basement. There was a small part of the basement closeted off, where the furnace and water heater were, plus a few boxes belonging to the landlord. We never went in there. When we were moving out, we did a thorough last check to make sure we hadn't forgotten anything, and opened the door- to be greeted by about a million dead ladybugs, covering all the surfaces. We screamed, shut the door, and never ever talked about it again.
