USPS thinks my worms are funny.

I ordered my mealworms without knowing much about raising mealworms. It turns out that you kill mealworms before drying them by putting them in the freezer for 15 minutes. Needless to say, we've set records with our temps out here.

Fortunately, the company second guessed me and didn't ship until Saturday and sent them overnight. In the meantime, my husband went to the post office and asked them to hold my worms. He must have quite the impression.

They were supposed to arrive today so I called around 8 am because I hadn't received a call from them and I wanted to reinforce the whole thing about them holding my worms.

The woman who answered the call started laughing. I heard laughter in the background. I was informed that there was a huge sign on the wall stating that the carrier was not to take out my worms. And everyone, absolutely everyone, knew not to touch my worms.

Imagine what they would think if they knew that we measured the temp in the basement and it's not warm enough so now the worms have to be in the living worm next to a radiator. (Rubbermaid tub with lid - what could go wrong?)

Tracking shows they arrived this afternoon. Just keep my worms warm!

Yes. They are so expensive and all of the dried ones are from China so I'm not sure what they're eating and I'm not sure what regulations they are subject to. My chickens love them and really need the protein which is a huge challenge during the winter. It's just easier to raise them. They do best at 68 F and love the dark. My basement is 42 F. Naturally, I did not plan ahead but I rarely do when I start these things. I try to be patient but never am.

Well, most of them are dead but I think I have enough to get this party started.

You have me laughing so hard!

Can the birds still have the dead ones or are they spoiled?

I've been googling that all day! There's a certain amount of disagreement online but I don't see why not. I'm actually feeding the worms with rolled oats and scratch grains with the intention of just scooping out everything in the bin with a coarse siever and feeding the birds with the bigger chunks including mealworms. That would take out all of the eggs and poop (frasse) but, yeah, the dead mealworms would be in there. I can't think how it would hurt. They eat dead squirrels after all.

Maybe they're not dead. I have no idea of what I'm doing but I thought the black ones were dead. Then I noticed that they're in different places. I can't help but wonder though if they are being moved around by the live ones which are the same color as the material they were delivered in. It seems like the feed they had is essentially a more ground down version of what I stocked the tank with so maybe more of them are alive than I thought. It's like a very small version of Dune. You can hear them moving around.

It's all good until the tube busts open on "500 Super Worms" - nothing like a worm roundup to get the morning started right! Not sure if they got all 500, but my DH (postal clerk) and our custodian gave it their all. Of course, it was for a customer on my route...

Oh no! I'm so sorry about that! I don't even touch our worms in either farm so I feel for all of you.
