Bad Owners of Good Pets - I Need to Vent

I am still pretty upset after giving a lovely cat back to bad owners/neighbours. The cat has been here off and on since September. Daily since it got cold. At night too, OH rushed outside in pajamas and slippers, in the snow and cold, to break up a screaming, howling, fur flying cat fight a couple of nights ago.

I myself rushed out to break up a fight with our own Joey two days ago. That's when Mr. Charming decided that HE would come to me too. I enticed him into our house and he was here for two whole days, inside my house. This lovely, to me anyway, if not to my cats, friendly, purring, playful, intact and not microchipped male cat. !!!

I put him on FB to try to find his owners. I had a couple of potential homes lined up. I was putting him through a local rescue I belong to. Meanwhile my own cats and he had a hate on hate for each other and I had to rotate cats from room to room to keep them separated yet still give all some time to be loose and play with me.

The woman across the road said he was hers. She said he'd been at her home last night. NO, I had him. She didn't say anything till last night but SHE is the admin who approved my posting him on our community page 48 hours earlier and she is the very first person who saw that I had found him. She said he was a barn cat so they let him out, they don't have a barn. She is the one who tortured her dog with a shock collar and after repeated strayings by him, including three she posted on the same page looking for him, STILL did not fix his fence, the collar with the battery for the fence or microchip him. He's gone, they never found him after he strayed last. I really think they contrived to lose him. He is also the dog they left outside alone and he barked for hours, all night for nights on end. 7 hours one Christmas Eve.

So I knew this was a bad, abusive, careless, neglectful home. Heck, I have more pictures of her cat than she does. But it was her cat, distinctive markings.

Next time I find an animal I will seriously consider not looking for owners, just try to find a good new home. I know that will not be fair to the good owners who do look after and love their pets but through no fault of their own lose them. I'd want my pet back.

    ARRGGGHHHHH!

Good owners would probably be actively looking for their lost family member as opposed to this person who only grudgingly admits to owning a pet.

Yes, and I did get a line on a look-alike cat who'd been posted missing back in September when this boy first showed up. They were actively looking, he could have been their cat and they'd given up. I never did get replies from them. One of the potential homes was with a lady who'd lost her cat then found her dead and had been frantically, actively searching. She felt that now several months had passed she was ready for another cat; I had high hopes of him going to her.

Here's an update. He did come back, three times. Each time he announced his presence by picking screaming, howling cat fights with the feral Tom who hangs out here. The last time OH found hair and blood in the snow. The hair was Charlie's, likely the blood was too. I went out after an hour, he came to me, I picked him up, he purred and snuggled into me. Then when we reached my deck he bit me. !!! Nice deep puncture wound. In my hand, about the worst place.

My blood in the snow with his. I could not get hold of his idiot owners to check rabies status so went to clinic and got tetanus shot and antibiotics. She came and took him home the next morning. Yes, I had him in our house all night and I was playing with him again. He's lovely when he's not fighting. He is now in quarantine for 10 days at her house. I had to fill in a bite form at the clinic and the Health Unit checks all bites out and quarantines whether the animal is vaccinated for rabies or not.

That was last Thursday. Nearly all the swelling has left my hand and it's gone from blue to a yellowish colour.

Now I have two big fears. #1, he will somehow escape quarantine, as he has left the house before, and I will have to take rabies shots.
#2 Charlie will just "disappear" as their dog did.

The trip to the clinic was a good call since bites can get nasty with infection. I hope his owners will able to keep him contained for the quarantine period.

I know this sounds defeatist but you did what you could and can't do anything else. I'm glad you're healing. We have similar neighbors and look out for their animals as best we can but it was made clear to me that the best one can do is to file complaints as appropriate and hope it makes an impression.

Updating to say, the cat did complete his quarantine and I got the phone call yesterday from the Health Unit to say he is ok. The Health Unit lady was told the owners are going to neuter him but the woman told us that a month ago and never did. Meanwhile the family has vacationned in Mexico, drives a new huge, gas guzzling SUV and has a crew of men fixing the front porch on their house. So money can't be the reason for not neutering him.

My hand is nearly completely better. Not swollen, no longer hurts to use it, and all but the biggest wounds have healed over. Some still have scabs and some will scar. The puncture wound the majority of the bleeding came from was so tiny it can no longer be seen at all.
