    Geese

Brooks and I had a field training day yesterday with the First State Retriever Club. He did a great job on 6 land marks, one just over 200 yards. He's had limited experience with dead birds, and this was the first time he's made retrieves like this without issue. Straight to the mark, picked it up, and straight back. I was very proud of him, he's been working very hard, and I think the light switch finally flipped. We came across a field of geese on our way home, I pulled over and watch flock after flock of geese come to what I can only assume was their roost for the night. It was wide open field, and the geese were quite wary of me walking through the field, knowing just how far to stay away for their safety. I did mange to get a few nice pics.

This was just one of many large flocks that came in while I was walking the field.

    Barry,
Geese roost on the water, not in fields.

Feeding. Over 90% of their diet is terrestrial grasses and grains. They roost on the water at night which aids in minimizing predation. Come morning, they leave the roost (water) and head to fields for food. 👍

Ah, gotcha. I was thinking they were spending the night in the fields as it was close to sunset, and a lot of the water is/was frozen over. Good to know!
