      Couple of pics from vacation

We're on our last night of a 11 day trip to Hawaii. We've split time between Maui and the Big Island. We've had a very good time, but I'm looking forward to getting back home to the dogs.

We did a sunset dinner cruise on Maui, and a cow Humpback whale and her 2 calves came up and circled the boat several times. It was dusk and the light was pretty horrible, but I did manage to get a couple pics.

Took this pic during a trip to Akaka Falls near Hilo on the Big Island. Much to my surprise, I didn't see the gecko until I got back and was reviewing the pics!

These are Ne Ne's, the Hawaiian state bird. These birds we all but extinct back in the early 1950's, with less than 30 birds. Thanks to a successful breeding program, they have bounced back with about 800 birds in the wild, and many more in captivity. The Ne NE is belevied to be a descendent of the Canada Goose. These were taken at the end of the Chain of Craters Road in Volcano National Park.

A shot of the Kilauea Volcano which has been erupting continuously since 1983. It was almost dark and misting heavily, making photography pretty difficult.

Oh the big Island, one of the Islands I have never been to but always wanted to. Those are some great pictures.

Oh and the smaller version of the pic with the Gecko. I must have look at it for a full minute before I seen it.

So that's what a nene looks like, huh? I do crossword puzzles in the paper frequently and "nene" is a popular answer, 4 letters, easy for the puzzle designer to fit into a puzzle, I guess. Thanks for sharing a bit of your trip!
