First Photobucket decides that folks who have used their service for years for free should all of a sudden pay, breaking thousands of photo links across the net. One of the buckets alternatives (for me) was postimg.org, now that domain has disappeared and all the photo's associated with along it.
So if you see folks talking about images that don't appear in their posts, now you know they haven't lost their mind.postimg.ORG domain is locked by Registry, no prior notice.
While we hope to resolve the issue, we chose postimg.CC as our new home.

I use sites like this to check if websites are up or down (Is postimg.org down? or Postimage.org - Is PostImage Down Right Now?) and there are some interesting comments.
They are up at Postimage.org — free image hosting / image upload and their domain was locked as you said but nobody is sure why. The images will come back when the issue gets resolved as they are still on their servers somewhere.
I am a big fan of using Imgur: The magic of the Internet for linking images on the fly and choose to store mine across dropbox, google drive and a portable hd at home.
