I had a similar situation while driving through a blizzard in the Virginia mountains a few years back. I was creeping along and the guy behind me kept coming within a car length. Aggravated I slowed down until he couldn't take it anymore and decided to pass me. Good Riddance! I happily resumed my way at a reasonable speed. I came around a corner and there was a volkswagon Jetta on its roof with the wheels still spinning. My tailgating friend was climbing out the passenger door with a dumbfounded look on his face. I so wanted to heckle the bugger but was glad to see he was in one piece.
Its scary when this stuff happens right in front of you. Everything seems to go in slow motion for a bit. Glad you weren't involved.

My Mum had an experience similar to JackK many years ago on her way home from skating late one Saturday night. Somebody came up fast behind her, pulled out left to pass and just never pulled back right. Instead the car went off the snowy road and down into the even snowier, deep ditch. This was way before the days of cellphones so Mum did not call Police till she got home. Next day she called me, pretty upset, wondering if she should have stopped and climbed down the ditch to see if help was needed. Sis and I both reassured Mum she'd done the right thing. Even though Mum was very fit and able she was an old lady and chances are the person driving was an eejit or worse. Yes, there might have been a passenger but still, we told Mum she handled it the best way she could/should have.

This is the one I'm looking at (front camera only). Gets excellent reviews, you can buy directly from the manufacturer at their Canadian web site, and their customer service seems to be great.
Jackx, yes time slllllllllooooooooowwwwwed down. That all happened in probably about five seconds yet felt much longer. Fear can paralyze you while fright can sharpen your awareness and responses. There was no time for fear and it's fascinating how my fright kicked in such that all those thoughts passed through my mind, most importantly 'don't mash the brake'.
Snowshoe, your mom did the best thing she knew to do. It's hard to know what to do.
