Disappointing Free the Beer Case Outcome

The price of beer in Quebec is about half the price of other provinces prompting people to make beer runs. A Canadian from NB got caught with 12 cases of beer and was fined as it is illegal to take beer across provincial borders. They challenged it and the Supreme Court did not rule in his favour.

'The Supreme Court of Canada unanimously ruled Thursday that Canadians do not have a constitutional right to buy and transport alcohol across provincial borders without impediments. The nine-justice panel said provinces have the right to restrict the importation of goods from another province, as long as the primary aim of the restriction is not to impede trade."

The court it appears was afraid of how a decision in favour of the Beer Case would effect prices of eggs, oil and tobacco.

The defeat also makes it easier for wine and craft beer companies to sell the products to China than it does in their own country.

While it's sad I cant see it stopping people from shopping for beer in Quebec.

I saw this on the news. Makes no sense to me when it's all within CANADA. The name 'Canada' means 'VILLAGE'... so what's the problem?!?! Ugh, our government has too much time on their hands and they should focus on more serious matters.

I read that. A disappointing and discouraging decision, more so because it was unanimous.

I can't find anything but beer articles since it made the news.

You can bring 24.6 litres of beer which is just under three cases of beer and is a very odd number.
