      Racoon Tracks?

Monday I noticed a rather large raccoon sleeping the tree behind my house. The neighbour puts out peanuts for the birds and since we have an increase in mice, chipmunks and of course birds. Now it looks like a raccoon has moved in. It has not been in the tree since Monday but I found these tracks on my pool cover this morning.

I am now worried about the dog and my upcoming garden.

      Thanks Everyone!!

Yeah putting stuff out for the animals is in general bad, you don't usually get to dictate what animals show up to eat.

For the longest time we kept getting skunks and possum, we live in the woods but still. Finally I seen my neighbor throwing stuff away in her back yard, elderly lady. I asked her about it, she said oh just corn husks and peeling and so on for the deer to eat. I was like deer don't eat that. That's garbage, skunks and possums do. She kept it up until a skunk burrowed under her deck and made itself at home. Sometimes you have to learn the hard way. Plus side since she quit I haven't seen skunks or possums in a few years.

The racoon has not been back or I have not seen him sleeping in the tree for the past few days.

I have read that a pepper and garlic spray around the garden will keep it away. Do things like this really work?

Looks like raccoon tracks. They come to our compost pile and are not a threat or danger. We bring our cat inside at night but two ferals sleep outside. My only concern is Distemper.

We have used Oil of Peppermint on cotton balls to repel many things. Outside you have to keep refreshing it. I haven't tried it specifically for raccoons but it sure kept squirrels out of my planters. And cats off my window screens. For cats use VERY sparingly, it can be toxic to cats if ingested or even inhaled. IN fact it would be good to read up on the dangers of essential oils to pets, and small children.

Yeah but the problem is you have to reapply after rain. One thing you may consider is planting some pumpkins, through out the garden. The pumpkin s grow vines that crawl along the ground, they have little spike on them this hurt the coons paws. Nothing bad but they do not like it so they tend to stay out of the gardens.
