What does that mean? A neighbor story.

I have been helping out with my older neighbor's home. He's basically just not there since he lives at another home and isn't willing to spend any money on this house.

I have a riding mower for my two or so acres and other equipment so when I have a project on my own house, I'll extend that to his house if it applies. I mow his lawn which is in terrible shape when I mow my acreage. I'll pull vines on his property when his property is in shade and mine is in sun. I'll spread mulch or grass seed on his property when I have extra or if it's on clearance.

Here's the thing though. I told another neighbor who is basically a good guy that I would be doing landscaping on my property this year and it would be a priority since we weren't doing any construction projects this year. It was a kind of chatty conversation along the lines of hey, how's your boy and what grade is he in. That kind of thing. He said something along the lines of being relieved because things weren't looking so good. It was an odd thing to say because his family can't see my property from his house. Then he pointed out something in my neighbor's backyard and I said, "You know that's not my property."

He gave me this really hard look and said, "Yes it is."

There is no question that the yard that I have been taking care of belongs to my elderly neighbor. It's on the property line with the other guy. Our property is nowhere near what he was referencing The remark was not just strange but I thought it was almost threatening. As if it was my responsibility just because I had been doing random stuff on it. What's really weird is that he and his wife are therapists.

    Any thoughts?

I would have asked why he thought that. Maybe he did because he sees you doing work in that area and thinks it’s yours. Another option, if the terrain, trees, whatever help dictate the line (ie. the start of a slight hill is the divider for my parents back yard) I would point out that’s where my property ends.

Maybe he thinks it yours because he sees you doing work on it. Sounds harmless but without hearing the conversation it's hard to say. I would have said that is Joe's property I am just helping him out by cutting the grass and moved on.
    Thanks Everyone!!

He's lived there for seven years and knows the situation with the guy who owns the property. My concern is that he thinks I have some responsibility for the property. He has a temper and has made things unpleasant before. I'll have to reevaluate if he keeps it up.

You've got the best neighbors. Not. Good luck...hope he doesn't start being a nuisance about this. You have no responsibility for this property...if he wants something done, he needs to contact the owner.
