    Rhododendron question.

These rhododendrons haven't bloomed for years. The area was overcrowded and there was a magnolia behind the hedge. I took out the magnolia and a hybrid azalea tree that was in the middle where that dip is. The hedge is clearly happier now but it's only blooming on the south side. It's hard to tell but there are a total of three bushes. The entire thing used to bloom ten years ago.

Any thoughts on getting the entire thing going again? I need to sculpt it. Should I prune it way back? Is there still too much competition?

My experience with rhodo/azaleas gives me no reason to think anything I say would be valuable. The properties on either side of us have wonderful blooming healthy shrubs...no upkeep going on for maintenance. Me? I've planted and planted and end up removing dead shrubs. Overfed? I stopped doing that. Overwatered? No. Insects/disease? No. Competition? No. My backyard dips lower between these two other properties...too cold in winter? Maybe.

The only azalea that has ever liked my backyard and has agreed to live...with spectacular yellow/orange blooms most years....is my hybrid. I love that shrub. It hasn't been fed in years and gets watered only when severe dryness has everything in that area looking wilted. (two things that never made any difference to the other shrubs I planted)

Re: competition for yours....the shrubs on either side of my property are totally overgrown for their areas and bloom like crazy. Probably not your problem. Probably. Don't listen to me.

Hope someone else can give you valuable advice.

Thanks Barb. Sounds like I should neglect it!

I miss the hybrid we had in the middle. I would have preferred to keep that and take out the rest but the rhododendrons won out in the end.
