    Flower help.

I need to plant annuals in New England for a 20 foot strip against a very pale yellow house with pure white trim. Any thoughts on colors and combinations? Different heights would be great. Something that's just straight green would help too if there are annuals for that. I can go with a few perennials but not a lot.

Thanks in advance. I know nothing. My entire property was planted in every shade of white, pink and pale purple by my mother in law and I feel no need to do anything about that.

If I recall you live in New England. I was going to suggest a few then re-read your post and this

stood out. I encourage growing native and naturalized plants. Look at solar exposure, soil, how much (or little) energy you wish to expend. I was going to name a few then remembered that some years ago someone sent me a link to this nursery. I went there and they have a great list of shrubs, grasses, trees, and flowers. Check it out!

Asked the neighbors what they wanted and they said, "Anything!" I ended up going to Home Depot and picking up some random things that I like. They don't necessarily go together but only need to last one season. I'm going to plant a bunch of bulbs in the fall so that it goes low maintenance. Obviously, this is the house that I take care of, not ours. It'll be fine. I was probably overthinking it.

I was thinking marigolds in different heights. Not supposed to be perennials here but some do come back each year. I'm overrun with hostas and putting them everywhere.

    That's a great idea.

I hear you about the hostas. I'm going to thin out our irises and put them by this house in the fall. Crazy with the bulbs around here. I hope that yellow goes well with yellow.

If you have deer wandering near there, you'll have a tough time keeping hostas. The deer consider them a favorite salad green.

I went with petunias in dark purple and a lighter purple in two shades, dead nettle, something called Snowbird Bluebell I think (tall), white impatiens (short), and something called Raspberry Parfait but that's the variety. So the petunias, dead nettle and Raspberry Parfait in the sun against the house and Bluebell with the impatiens in the shade. The dead nettle and Bluebells are perennials but the plan is to put in bulbs this fall. There are a bunch already there but I had to chop everything down to get out the invasive vines. I'm not an annual person, but I think I'm becoming one. Shopping was fun!

Your second picture is Columbine (I guess that's your Snowbird Bluebell?)… the last picture looks like Dianthus (related to Carnations). Pretty.

Ahhh. OK. As I recall, it's a cross. The flowers are huge. We have columbine on the property and these flowers are about ten times the size. I just really liked the color.

I've always liked carnations. These just struck me for the contrast. I like the leaves as well.

Thanks! This is quite the education.
