    Credit Card Stolen, Again

Second time this has happened. First time was in 2014.

I get the call from my bank but missed the call. I login online and see that a car rental agency in Honduras has charged $192 worth of gas to my card. They cancelled the card right away and were helpful.

It's more of a pain in the rear than anything.
    Thanks Everyone!!

It really is. The first time I had that happen, it was annoying. The second time was a whole new level of annoying, because now I have a bunch of bills auto paid through the card, and I had to get them all set up again.

Same with me and in order to get the card in time to set up my payments I have to travel to the nearest bank and pick it up etc.
    Thanks Everyone!!

WAs it just your number or did the whole card get stolen? With me, my card was due for renewal and I was expecting a new one in the mail. It didn't come and didn't come and finally I wised up and checked my bill online and found itunes purchases that I had not made. My card company cancelled them too and express mailed a new card to me. Funny thing, the OH's new card was due too, also did not come, but had no unusual bills on it. We regularly, maybe 3 or 4 times a year, get mail that should go to a neighbour. Same house number, street letters is about as long on an address as ours. IS he getting ours? I know him, can't imagine him using my card.

One thing that has really helped me is I have 2 Visa credit cards. One for online purchases and one for bills. The bills one is used only for bills. This one has never been hacked. I use it for nothing else. Nothing out and about, no restaurants, no gas station. The second one is where I do online purchases. One thing that has really helped though is not using my card on sketchy sites, typically doing paypal only. If they don't do paypal, I just don't buy from them. Then I have Paypal set up for two factor authentication.

Another thing, look back at your history every time it was stolen, look back like a month before, even a couple weeks before see if you did purchases from the same place each it might help you narrow it down where it is happening. The place might not even know. Small restaurants and so on might be hacked or have had their wifi compromised, they may not even be aware of it.

Restaurants have gotten me. You hand off your card and then they bring it back ... after running it through the legit reader and a "special" one for later use. In business I have to use the card to keep purchase records but for personal use I no longer use my credit card at restaurants. Especially avoid using debit cards wherever the card leaves your hand ... it is a real pain to have to re-setup bill pay after getting hacked.

I don't like the card leaving the table either. I figure somebody swiped it twice at the hotel the first time it happened.

The lady I dealt with at Mastercard said that sometimes they just start pulling random numbers with the three code on the back until they hit one that works.
    Thanks Everyone!!

Now this is strange. I made an line purchase just two days ago that came to just over $50.00. I got an immediate fraud alert email which I phoned about - NOT using the phone number in the email. Straightened it all out, yes I did make the purchase. Then yesterday morning a fraud alert phone message from my card company too. I did not phone again, so now I think I should buy something inconsequential to be sure my card still works as both messages said it would be frozen.

    That sucks.

I frequently use cash for in person purchases. One reason is it's (virtually) impossible for foreign agents to hack the transaction.

I do not use PayPal because they (at my last check) may share your data with an amazing number of third party companies. The more companies that have access to your data the more potential there is for your data to leak or be hacked.
