Now I can't give directions either.

When we first moved here, I would get so angry with my husband. He never told me which streets to use. He would use landmarks from his childhood.

    We would have these "conversations".

    Me: Where do I turn?
    DH: At the A & P.
    Pause.
DH: Here! Here! Make a left!
    Me: That's an apartment complex!
DH: Well it used to be the A & P.
    Me: When?
DH: When I was a kid.
Me: So, like, forty years ago. How does that help me?

I've always been confused about the fact that a state that has an interstate mile marker every tenth of a mile is incapable of posting named street signs but I think that contributes to the fact that no one knows what the actual street names are. As a result, I have become what I once hated. The landmark direction giver. In short, I have no idea of what street I am on but I do know that I need to turn left at the crabapple tree. The crabapple tree that was cut down ten years ago.

So now we have the following conversations.

Me: Traffic is stopped on the usual route. Construction.
DH: What route are you taking?
    Me: I'm going by Sam's past Keeper's.
    DH: Sounds good.

Sam's moved five years ago and Keeper's Restaurant is now some Bar and Grille we've never been to.

Basically, if you've never been to New England, I'm the last person you should be stopping on the street to ask directions from.

I worked in a tourist booth and overheard my colleague telling someone to turn left at the old CTC. She was very embarassed when even the tourist realized if it was the "old" CTC, then there must be a new one. So was the old one, complete with signs, still in it's old spot? Nope.

Yes, me too. And think of all the history we've lost when we use navigation systems on our phones or in our cars.

"Turn left in 500 feet" just doesn't have the same ring as, "Turn left just past where that Episcopal church used to be."
