Human Names - A Bit Strange?

I seem to be on some kind of name obsession. Just discovered my friend Margaret, called Marg, has a twin sister named Marjorie, called Marjie. A bit strange, eh? I thought friends naming their children Michael and Michelle (not twins) basically gave their boy and girl the same name. And a fellow at work named his daughters Amanda and Alanna (not twins) which, to me, are so similar as to be just about the same name.

What about you, know any similar tendency amongst your friends?

A family that rented a house on our street up until just recently had three boys named Vernon. I say three...those were the three oldest. I never knew the names of the five youngest. For all I know, they were Vernons, too. All three girls were the mother's name and two slight variations (same letters with a different letter order and one had an extra letter). I'd take Michael/Michelle over that.

Oh geez, why do people do these things to their kids?

I had a teacher, long long ago, who was a twin. His name was Clyde Lewis and his twin's name was Lewis Clyde. He was a terrific teacher even if his parents were unimaginative.

We also had some neighbors who do that thing where every family member's first name starts with the same first letter. I can't remember them all but some of them sounded very similar and some sounded a little... invented. I guess I should be glad that my husband's name and mine do not start with the same letter, no temptation to do a run on S's.

I went to school with a William Williamson. What were his parents thinking?

Nimrod Arod. Sender Fontwit. Dee Liverance. People do these things.

My mother gave all of us four letter names. That was her only criterion.

Remember George Foreman? All of his sons are named George. There are five of them I think.

Everybody across the street from us starts with "M" even the pets, of which there have been 5 GR. Between the three kids there are four grandchildren but only one of them is "M" Nice neighbours.

How about a fellow at school named Doug McDougall? It rhymes with Pug and Poodle but it looks repetitive in writing.

@Janedoe, a lady I worked with kept lists of names and checked birth and death notices for them. She said one of her favourites was Ruby Pearl Diamond. I imagine everyone will guess that was a death notice. I dodn't remember if the last name there was her married name or not.

The paperwork for a child being registered for school had her first name down as L'--ia. When asked, the parent said it was pronounced Ladashia.

A student's hall pass had her name down as Shiteria. I asked her to say her first name, rather than me try, and it was pronounced Shy-teria. Whew!

Those were pretty memorable. I don't understand some naming practices.

    (snort)

A man I used to work with told me about someone....gosh, it may have been a joke....who'd named her newborn daughter Precious ToMe. It was suggested that she talk to her pastor about that name and, sure enough, she changed it. To Precious Toujours.

How about Crystal Ball and then there were the 3 sisters April, May and June. When you teach you see all kinds of wonderful names.
