Seriously, something I've learned (and am just recently starting to accept) is that what is REALLY IMPORTANT to me is not necessarily of such importance to others. For example, when I teach, my class is priority #1 and every assignment that I slave over creating and grading is monumental. But for my students, my class is just one of five that they're taking, on top of a job, family, friend drama, etc. So when they decide to skip an assignment, it's a huge deal to me but not to them. This realization has let me stop taking their actions less personally, and it's helped me keep my calm.
Extrapolating from that, I would guess your clients had Major Drama going on, so their dealings with you were not nearly as negative as you felt them. Hopefully their money problems have resolved and you can get paid on time!
