    Client from hell.

We have a client who ran out of money. After two and a half months, they started making noises about an investor who was micro-managing so the money wasn't available but they kept authorizing hours and asking for services so we provided them, getting written approval according to the contract. Then we got a lecture on how expensive we were, they asked for all of the completed work and the checks stopped.

Six weeks passed. They owed us a significant sum and it was crickets on their end. We proceeded with work for other clients and expanded a scope of work with one in particular. Also looked up a collections agency.

Out of the blue we got a check with a printed copy of an e-mail saying that they had to pay us to get further services. Well, we weren't immediately available any longer and told them when we would be.

First meeting when we told them we would be available we heard this: "Are you OK? We were worried about you!"

It's funny on some level, mostly because we had moved on but OMG. People actually behave like this.

Life is a tapestry, my friend. LOL.

Seriously, something I've learned (and am just recently starting to accept) is that what is REALLY IMPORTANT to me is not necessarily of such importance to others. For example, when I teach, my class is priority #1 and every assignment that I slave over creating and grading is monumental. But for my students, my class is just one of five that they're taking, on top of a job, family, friend drama, etc. So when they decide to skip an assignment, it's a huge deal to me but not to them. This realization has let me stop taking their actions less personally, and it's helped me keep my calm.

Extrapolating from that, I would guess your clients had Major Drama going on, so their dealings with you were not nearly as negative as you felt them. Hopefully their money problems have resolved and you can get paid on time!

We're really good with clients who are upfront with us. One guy took 15 months to pay us and called us recently to say hello and let us know the full details of what was happening with him at the time. We already knew most of it and completed the work because we wanted him to succeed - and he did. He got the certification and has a bunch more business as a result.

Passive aggression while telling us that the check is on the way with a concerned tone as followup is a completely different story for me. There's just no need for that. It really does get them sent to collections because they simply aren't being honest so we don't know if their intentions are any good. It also gets them sent straight to the bottom of the priority list. If they need immediate attention, oh well.

I do hear what you're saying but it is a contract and services were rendered.

Because sometimes good people have real, unexpected problems and deserve to be cut some slack. It's rare but it happens. Our timeline for repercussions is realistic if they are trying because we have given them the tools to succeed. What we can't stand are dishonest individuals who throw up a smoke screen so that they can get away with not paying their bills.
