Chicken in the living room. How it happens.

We have a young bird who wasn't looking good when her group started to lay. She looked egg bound so I put her in the basement in the "hospital" environment (peace, quiet, no competition for food) for a couple of weeks. There's plenty of light and air. It's a room that I frankly would love to convert into a finished living space. In the meantime my husband named her Henley. She looked better with no more egg bound hunching so I tried to put her out with her group today and it was an ugly scene. I gave it a bit of time and went to change their water and she made a run for it. I would say that she weighs maybe 2/3 of what the other birds her age do. She's gentle and sweet and fragile and clearly can't survive on her own.

So now we have a pet chicken. I'll bring her upstairs tomorrow. She'll live out her life however short that might be in our space and we'll put her out front in a cage during the day.

And that's how you wind up with a chicken in your living room!

That's sweet! Thank you. You probably also know that she's already in the living room.

How do you contain the chicken poop, are you housebreaking your new house pet? LOL

I haven't been able to for a couple of weeks. Woody is looking into it.

I put Fran's old crate on top of Nikki's. Nikki is so used to chickens that she didn't even wake up during this process. The outside kennel that she has is 5' x 5' x 4' so she has plenty of space to get around during the day. Oddly, she doesn't like being out there. She came right up to me late this afternoon like, come on, let's go.

My concern about her being in the basement was that birds are very social so I wanted her to see activity and watch TV.

I was also wondering how she was contained in the living room. A comfy little roost with easy access to the TV remote and some good snackage from the kitchen.
