    Clueless

Yesterday I had to go to my hometown, about an hour away, for an appointment. On Tuesday night I was making turkey meatloaf with a ketchup and brown sugar glaze and as long as I was making one, I made a second one to take with me for my mother and sister, who still live there. My mom is getting older and can't do as much cooking as she used to because it's too tiring for her to stand for long periods. Sometimes I make something to take along to spare them from the heat and eat stuff from the grocery store. They can heat and eat some homemade food instead.

Anyway, after the appointment, I returned to her house and she had cut the meatloaf into slices to be eaten on sandwiches. All good, so far. It's the conversation after I'd finished my sandwich that stopped me in my tracks:

Mom: Would you like another sandwich or another piece of meatloaf? There's a knife there in case you want to scrape that stuff off.

Me (silently to myself): Who do you think put "that stuff" on there to begin with?

I guess this falls into the category of no good deed goes unpunished...

Mine pretty well sinks in, you couldn't scrape it off without taking a slice of meatloaf with it. And I use the same thing for a topping, it's yummy.

Ohhh, meatloaf just isn't meatloaf without that "stuff" on top. My meatloaf gets extra "stuff" on top! yum.

I put 2 coats of the ketchup glaze on the meatloaf, one as it's going into the oven, the other about halfway through. If it was one coating, I think it would be pretty stuck down. The second coating, while cooked, hasn't gotten as thick and sticky by the end of the cooking time so it could be scraped off. But yeah, that is half the reason you're eating a meatloaf to begin with.

I made another big family meal at her house around Thanksgiving last year and took all the food up there to cook, crab cakes, veg, potatoes, salad, dessert, the works. As I was fixing the Caesar salad, in which our family recipe uses coddled or soft boiled eggs, my mother helpfully asked if I noticed that I'd overcooked the eggs. Oh geez. I'm sure she wasn't saying it to be spiteful, just not filtering the thoughts between her brain and her mouth. Say Mom, why don't you go in and spend some time with [my other sister] and her family?

I put it in it, I put it on it. No such thing as too much ketchup in a meatloaf.

This happens to me at the shelter. People forget that I was the one who brought the stuff in. I made cupcakes at their request once but went with a store bought mix and frosting because I do true buttercreams and one of the cooks leaves stuff out for forever and I don't anyone to get sick. So yeah, not the greatest cupcakes but I wasn't expecting to be told that they "no" they didn't want those cupcakes again. It was clear that she didn't remember that I baked them. But then she remembered and the expression on her face . . .

Awwww, smile, give your mom a hug and kiss, and tell her you love her. Unfortunately, as people get older, they lose their short term memory first, so she probably had already forgotten that you'd made the meatloaf. It was very sweet of you to take her an easy meal.
