    Certified mail 101.

It doesn't matter if you don't pick it up. We mailed nine people or groups of people the identical letter. Two were just notifying the town about what was going on. The two worst offenders have not picked it up. Everyone else has.

I said to my husband, "Do you think they are so slow that they don't know it doesn't matter if they pick it up?"

Certified mail 101: The whole point of certified mail is that it was sent so you had access to it whether you picked it up and read it or not. It's a legal thing. You can't just say that you didn't get it.

    Anyway. That is all.

    This is interesting.

I thought the idea of "certified mail" is so that the person would have to "sign" for it and therefore, you would have receipt that they received it? There has to be a signature to prove it was received.

The mail person will deliver to the door asking for a signature, and if you're not home, they will leave a slip for you to pick it up.

Right. The slip shows who signed for it and gives a date. However, if no one picks it up, you can show that the person was notified that the document was sent and they refused it by not picking it up. The process is documented. That is all the law requires. In other words, you can't just ignore it and claim that you didn't know what the contents were therefore you weren't notified.

One of the things that the neighbor doesn't know as well is that we sent one to the school in his name because he's on the Board of Trustees. Someone signed for it so he got it whether he likes it or not. Just to be on the safe side.

Having been in the legal field more than 1/2 of my life, certified mail receipts were one of my favorites! I loved it when I called opposing counsel about a pleading or something we sent them to be signed and the assistant would get all indignant about not having received it so we were in the wrong.

Me: I am calling because the settlement agreement we sent over hasn't been returned yet.
Her: *cue indignant nastiness* We never received it.
    Me: Your name again?
    Her: Mary Smith
Me: *looking at the signature and date on the return/receipt card* Well Mary, you're the one who signed for it--nine days ago.
    Her: *crickets* Oh.

Bahahahaha! One of my favoritest moments.
