I have 5 sewing machines and each is different in threading technique for the needle and bobbin. It's a pain in the neck. Only two of the machines have interchangeable bobbins and each one needs the thread coming out of the bobbin in a particular direction. The oldest even has a bobbin cover which has an adjustable screw for bobbin tension. Keeps me on my toes.
For the need for the white background, would a small piece of white adhesive type tape in the right spot help.

if the timing is off or the needle is misaligned...the feed dogs or material too thick/thin...bobbin bent or wound too tight...thread diameter too thick/thin...it all is important. pay attention and learn about all the parts/process as any one of them can result in poor performance. sometimes if you have had problems stitching a bunch of thread may be all knotted up under the feed tray/throat plate. just pay attention as you go...tension on the pressor foot...so many things you should try to learn as its all important.
I went thru a sewing machine repair class 20 yrs ago so I could modify gear on operators tactical equipment...that heavy/thick material would break alot of machines. good luck.
