The paper book is not dead.

Faye and I went to the big city last weekend. Among our stops was Chapters, a Canadian bookstore chain.

The place was hopping! Sure, they sell knick knacks, souvenirs, clothing, books on CD. Folks of all ages were there. People were seated in comfortable chairs, reading. Staff were quite busy helping.

Faye bought two of Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache series and collected a $10 discount card. Nothing caught my fancy, though I will use the card to buy 1 (or maybe all 3) of Cixin Liu's trilogy, The Three-Body Problem.

The book printed on paper is not dead.

And they won't be as long as I'm alive.

I think I have read all the Inspector Gamache novels and by read I mean listened to on CD. I really like the reader. There was a previous reader with a wonderful, warm voice who died. They found a really good replacement. And that’s all aside from the issue of actual books from an actual store. My sister and I often send each other books as birthday gifts. What would we do if there were no paper books?

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

I have enjoyed books on disk and expect to continue doing so. I have tried to enjoy books on a reader of one kind or another . . . it is not the same so I stopped.

I love these. A couple of local communities have put up "library boxes" where you can put your read books in and take others out, no card, fee or anything. It's a great idea. In fact, your thread today reminds me to go by one on our way home from the Vet this afternoon.

I used to have a tee-shirt with this quote on it.
