Local shops are few and far between. I went to Best Buy today to check out point and shoot cameras as I’m thinking of upgrading (the phone is fine in a pinch but I want something more substantial when traveling). One of their staff asked if I needed any help so I asked her opinion between the 2 models I am targeting (both Canon just one has more features) and she went over and read the tag, then said something complexly inaccurate about cameras in general. No help at all - sigh.

    Aye Mates,
If spending lots of time on lengthy treks whilst lugging photographic equipment, ye may wish to consider mirrorless options. There are several really nice point and shoot models if that suits ye needs. There are also some really nice interchangeable lens models that will lend for more creativity options and especially when shooting in manual setting modes. Identifying ye needs and ye budget is a helpful starting point.

If ye can get to an actual camera shop ye would be far more likely to find well trained and knowledgeable staff to speak with and a much larger array of equipment. Once you have identified a specific make and model that fits your needs, B & H Photo is a great and reliable seller at very good pricing, especially so if ye ye can hit some o' their sales offerings. I have ordered equipment from them and had it at me door within 1 to 3 days.

Good luck in ye search and post up some photographs once ye get started.

If I hadn't invested in my 80D I probably would have gone mirrorless, especially after using yours. Mine is like a boat anchor compared to yours!

This, and to put is simply, full frame will get you better quality pictures and are much more expensive than crop bodies, however, since the OP is not a professional, he won't need it and can save the money to buy a nice lens instead

Shelley, thanks for the link. Now I understand the difference.

JC001, local shops are indeed few and far between. With so many people focusing (too much) on price alone it is more difficult to find truly knowledgeable sales people. We learned that a mom and pop photo shoo in Faye’s home town no longer exists.

IRISHWHISTLER, I don’t anticipate hiking too far with my equipment. You could think of it as the photographic equivalent to car camping. I will certainly share photos once I’m up and photographing.

Berna, thanks. It seems that a crop better suits my needs and wants.

Just to clarify, the eco system is for the brand because the use different mounts. There are a few 3rd party brands that make very good lenses for both Nikon and Canon (I’m sure other brands too).

If you are planning on shooting action shots, check the continuous or burst speed. I got some great air show and flying bird pictures by just holding the shutter and letting the camera rapid fire. It took some practice to keep the camera still vs trying to follow the action. Lots of wasted shots before the birds and planes get into the frame but the fact digital doesn’t waste money on film and developing it is easy and cheap to shoot way more than you will keep and cropping so the “action” is in the right place helps too.

The ability to shoot the same thing with multiple settings on just still shots without paying for film and developing is a great way to learn too.

Most, if not all, cameras now have a timer and you can get a remote shutter release after the fact (I rarely use mine since the timer works just as well to
keep my hands off the camera so I don’t cause any shake during slow shutter speeds...and it gives plenty of time to get into the shot if that’s what using it for.

I had a Canon Digital Rebel (first model) and now use a Canon Ti3.

I know camera shops are few and far between, but maybe even a Costco or other Big Box store might have a few models you can pick up in your hands. I tried to love Canon and the camera body didn't feel right in my hands, while the Nikon body felt great and natural right away.
You can also ask if some friends have a brand you can test out, just to get a feel for it. As a matter of fact, I know you can rent good quality glass (lenses) perhaps you could rent the camera you think you want, to test drive it. Just a thought anyways.

JC001, thanks for ensuring I understood about ecosystems. About action shots I haven’t considered focusing on one static spot instead of following the subject. I will have to try that! My Fuji has a 10 second timer as does the iPad so we have some practice setting up then using that if I (we) want to get in the frame.

Shelley, thanks for the suggestion to rent. I understand what you mean about trying different things to get a good fit.

Think I’ll be very happy with whatever I’m blessed to get.
