    NexGard

My Vet has been recommending NexGard over Frontline for fleas/ticks.

Does anyone have experience with using this?

I've been very hesitant...I've heard some dogs having bad side effects from it?

    Any thoughts?

Lark was positive for ehrlichiosis earlier this year and I switched from Frontline to NexGard. Then, like you, I heard some dogs have neurologic side effects from NexGard so after one dose, I decided to switch back.

Somewhere in all my reading on ehrlichiosis I found an article that said the class of meds to which NexGard belongs to may be more effective than a topical because although it doesn't prevent tick attachment, they are killed relatively quickly. But, I hate to risk seizures, etc. Here's the article from the ACVIM, a consensus statement regarding Lyme dx, but also references other tick borne illnesses.

So, tick checks and Frontline are what I'm still doing.

Thanks for your reply... I will check out the links you provided.

I am very, very hesitant to try NexGard. I certainly would never want my dog to start having seizures...It makes we wonder if the benefits really outweigh the risks.

UGH! I switched the boys over to Nexgard from Frontline due to all the weekly swimming. I started Nexgard at the end of May. The heart preventative is Sentinel Spectrum. After 3 doses, Samson began having focal seizures. I took him in for blood work and an evaluation and nothing came up. The only thing changed in his world was the addition of Nexgard. Immediately stopped them after reading the potential of neurological impact. Ugh, I should have researched first. He has had no signs of focal seizures since. Asher had no reaction but I stopped his too. Run and run fast from Nexgard in my opinion.

After two months without protection I decided it was time to try something new (Asher in the vet weekly and then rehab twice a weeek). I purchased the 8 month flea collar from Seresto. Within 12 hrs of wearing, Asher had a horrible reaction. Blisters on the back of his neck and the base of his tail. He crawled in bed with me and the back of his neck touched my face and it was soaked. I thought maybe he peed in the crate. When I turned on the light, it was pink fluid. I was horrified. Samson had no reaction to this collar. I left his on. I went back to Frontline for Asher.

    Good luck!

Our vet recommended Simparica for our sensitive pooches. They've been on it for over a year now with no side effects. On paper, it looks pretty much as dismal as Nexgard and Bravecto in terms of possible side effects but with lesser incidence. Danny's liver was one concern for what we chose. I figure if it hasn't shown signs in my dogs by now, that's a pretty good endorsement. It's pricey.

Oh My Goodness! Sounds like a nightmare!

Honestly, I'm not feeling Nexgard at all! There seems to be more bad reviews than good ones.

I think I will stick to Frontline too.

About NexGard and other "new" products: I don't even want to try them. I wonder what kind of a poison that must be for a dog to ingest it and for it to last for a month or more! I am fine with Advantix.

It was on each. Poor Asher had to have the spots shaved, put on anti itch meds and antibiotics. It looked so painful. About a 4" by 4" patch neck and end of spine. Just not for us.
