Your stalk does not go undetected, the buck's tail flags, he hesitates ever so briefly and flashes one last look over his shoulder, his eyes focus intently upon you for what seems like an eternity, your rifle comes up as he takes the wall in one swift bound and you take one last look. He is gone.

What a magnificent animal...sorry, I'm glad he got away.
Sundance,
No apology necessary. I have spent much of my lifetime as a hardcore outdoorsman and an entire career in wildlife conservation law enforcement. I captured this shot on the next to the last day of the rifle season for hunting deer and I was carrying a camera, not a rifle. I had deer tags that went unused this season, my choice to spend quality time with my Labs TRAD and MAC winning out over spending time deer hunting. The fictional account I scribed to go with the photograph is based on the collective experiences of many deer hunters, meself included. Any serious deer hunters that have spent time in the pursuit of big whitetails have also experienced "ONE LAST LOOK" at least once in their time spent hunting. I consider meself blessed to have shared this encounter with this magnificent whitetail buck, the brevity of our meeting being heavily exaggerated given I had the time to take 138 more images of him with my camera set to single drive mode. My career required me to depend on stealth and to have a great knowledge of the habits of indigenous wildlife, both skill sets that serve me well as a photographer. Bucks like this one are big for several reasons, amongst those are masterful survival instincts. I had no regrets at taking only a photograph of this beautiful buck, another outdoor memory made.

When I read your initial telling of the tale, I, too, was glad you held a camera rather than a rifle for this shot. Although, having had one of those big deer slam into your car or that of a loved one makes you a bit less fond of those guys in urban areas.
We have way too many deer in our area....wish they'd have more deer control hunts. That said, my heart gives a hitch every time I see one lying on the side of the road. There's nothing natural about losing your life to the bumper of a car...just not fair. We're very overdeveloped around here (grrrrr……) and are taking over the deer's natural habitat.
