    Stick 'em up

    Aye Mates,

A few examples o' the many shorebird decoys I have carved o'er the years. The miniature heron and the six bird from the left were made by other carver friends o' mine. I generally make these in a "contemporary antique" style as the hunting o'[ shorebirds has been illegal in the USA since the early 1900's. I always loved the form of shorebirds for their graceful line. Most o' these were subjected to various aging techniques including shooting them with a shotgun from a distance to imbed birdshot in them, much like would be seen in decoys that were hunted o'er. Tis style o' decoy is often referred to as a "stick up" for the single leg dowel that was plunged into the beach sand whence hunting birds on tidal mud flats and beaches.

    Cheers,
