Do you want to know if it hurts?

I had my basal cell surgery today on my face. Everything went well but the doctor looked at it again before he started and said, "That's much bigger than I thought." Now I have two inches of stitches on my face. This required quite a bit of local anesthetic. The nurse told me that it was going to hurt. And it did. We had to stop after about three injections for a few seconds.

Here's the thing though. I like it when they tell me that it's going to hurt. It lets me prepare. I don't like it when they tell me I'm going to feel a pinch so I'm not expecting it. It makes it hurt more. I'm not sure why they do that.

What do you want to hear? Does it ever make sense to tell someone it's just a pinch?

I don’t think it hurts more or less but do prefer to be prepared.

I recently just had a pain relief shot at the doctor for back spasms. Let’s just say I was not facing the nurse so she couldn’t see the evil eye I was giving her because she didn’t warn me it was going to sting.

Yeah, if they tell me it's going to hurt, then I can be mentally prepared and hopefully pleasantly surprised when it doesn't hurt as bad as I expected.

It seems that numbing meds sting like heck going in. I'd rather know and be prepared for the short period of time before it takes effect. I had one doc use a super fine needle and inject a tiny amount, wait a very short time, inject again a little deeper, and again until time to start. First injection stung but as it took effect, the subsequent injections were very easy.

Me too, I want to know EVERYTHING ahead of time. I really don't feel hurt like some people do (hence the ankle I broke the day of my siggy pic and walked out of the bush on it, drove home and two days later went to hospital) but I fear the worry and anticipation of hurt. And I fear, and feel more, hurt induced by others. We had a dog like that. Whisper would pull snowballs out of her feet and they'd bleed, no problem to her. I'd help and she'd whimper. My Dentist now gives me all the gory details ahead of time without asking. He says it will pinch when he freezes before a filling. Still, I hope your face heals up quickly. I bet you feel it pulling when you talk or eat. Does it just happens to be the side you want to sleep on too?

I wanted to know everything too. How long is the numbing going to take? How long is the surgery total? It was fine but I needed to know how long I was going to be lying there, if there would be any pauses, etc.

It is better today but yesterday I just sipped soup from a spoon. Couldn't floss. Fortunately, it is not on the side I mostly sleep on but I do shift around a lot so I have to train myself to lie still. The bandage is so big though that I think if I rolled over and hit it I would wake up. What a pain though.

Hope your healing goes smoothly and quickly.

I'm definitely in the camp of wanting to know everything as we go along. I would imagine that people using needles want just as much to avoid having a patient jerk away in surprise as they want to offer reassurance that the sensation is normal. I know I sure appreciated extensive talking-through every time I've had anesthesia (dental procedures)….BP normal, all is OK, getting woozy, etc....all the way to "hey, you lived through it". OK, I made up that last bit.

The dentist I go to talks me through as he drills/etc. along...very reassuring. (I hate going to the dentist but he doesn't know that...he might figure that most people do. Or maybe he wants to be favorably compared to my last dentist...his friend...my husband.) (No worries, Doc.)

I want to know so I can go to my happy place in my head, which allows me to not worry about the pain. I had a doctor injecting a spot on my foot a couple years ago, and the whole time she's injecting me she keeps looking at my face. She says to me, you must have a pretty high tolerance to pain, most people cry and carry on when I give them this shot, and you didn't even flinch. I told her that the shot definitely hurt, but I had checked out to my happy place which helps me to not react to it.

This thread reminds me of the old westerns where they pull an arrow or bullet out, give them a shot of whiskey and a piece of leather to chew on and tell this this is going to hurt.

I like the idea of being able to brace myself.
    Thanks Everyone!!
