    Flooded Basement

Oh how I wish the cold weather had stayed. We got a call to help a neighbour with water in her basement, a couple of inches across all of it. It was pouring rain out and the ground is frozen so the melt and rain ran into her window well. Then we discovered water was coming into our own basement. Not as badly but we wet vacced, and chopped drainage channels and bucket threw water away from both houses till midnight. Then OH discovered one of the drains he put in our backyard, the one under the deck where it's hardest to get at, was blocked with leaves the melt and rain washed in. Once he cleared that the water rushed away with a roar. Going back to bed soon.

Oh, man....good luck getting everything dried out quickly. Maybe there's something you can do to protect that drain from future debris issues.

    Dry thoughts headed your way!

Wow, the force of the water took sand away from underneath the patio slab that's by the wall where the water came in. There's a good sized hole there now. Thing is, where the heck did that sand go to? And how big is the hole? We can't see all of the hole, it runs under the stairs that go down to our below grade basement walkout. OH is making a run to town to buy sand. Our whole yard is mostly pure sand but it's frozen and under snow and ice. He thinks it will be easier to buy sand somewhere, dry sand that he can pour.

It is unbelievable the amount of snow that disappeared over night. I am sure that there are a lot of people with water problems this morning. We are fortunate that the run off flows away from the house. We have one low lying area in the from yard that fills up like a shallow pond. The township had offered to fill it when they were doing some road work but we declined simply for the reason above. In the Spring the dogs like to paddle about in it so I am keeping an eye on them now. They don't need a swim at this time of year.
Hope you get your problem solved. Water in the basement is no fun.

If the sand disappeared like that, what are the chances you have a sinkhole? (hope not)

I also hope you don't have a sink hole. Water is very powerful. It can do tremendous damage

I had something similar happen to me several years ago and it was miserable! I ended up installing french drains around the entire perimeter of the basement as well as two sump pumps. With that done, I refinished the entire basement so it's now an awesome recreation room. So it all ended well, but was a nightmare in the beginning and wasn't cheap to get to where it is today!

This time of year, freeze and thaw, is a challenge. We have a sump that pumps above ground outside. Since we are higher than any house around us I'm always worrying the sump is not working but it is. We have to change from outside drainage to inside depending on the weather and this time of year it can be on a daily basis.

    What french drains?

It took 5 bags of 25 kg dry sand for mortar mix to fill the hole. The neighbour used 15 bags. Our hole goes down to where the septic pipes exit the house, so it's always warm there. We wonder if a little chipmunk started that hole.
