I periodically look up my father to see what's going on. I would like to say that the relationship is complicated but it's not. He's just not interested and I've come to terms with that. Daughters just aren't his thing.
He's had Parkinson's for many years. His wife started a support group and they made the local paper in their city. I thought, oh, that's great! He has a lot of family in the area so I've never been worried about his care and I'm a huge believer in support groups having been a caregiver myself.
Imagine my surprise when I read the article and found that my stepmother had stolen my brother's identity and assigned it to her own son! This is a bold move given that my brother is a doctor and diagnosed my father 20 years ago. According to the article, her son became a doctor, diagnosed my father, then moved from a southern state in which my brother still lives to Canada to help take care of my father and has been a model son ever since. In actual fact, her son has been living on their property in Canada and farming it ever since he graduated as a drama major 30 years ago. I sure hope he's not masquerading as a doctor for the people in the support group!
I'm not surprised though. She once told everyone who worked for her that she had a master's in French. She had only completed one semester in community college. Someone caught on and brought her a letter to translate and she claimed it was an obscure dialect.
While it's mostly funny because it's so absurd, I find it sad that she can't be proud of her kid for who he is.

I'm sure I don't know the half of it.
I have something called the Top Ten. Basically, if you make it to that list either through something you said or did, you have lost your mind. This made it!

Hi JaneDoe, glad to see you, I think I have a bizzare family too, my sisters and I have finally discovered that we have the same theory about my father, who is now deceased, he never wanted girl children, but in the end he was forced to ask one of us to help him with his funeral, which was like a bash for a dignitary! Life goes on and we just try to laugh things off.

Yeah, I mean what are you going to do? My father was prompted by his wife to a buy horse for his youngest daughter for her 16th birthday. He didn't know when she was born so he bought it for his youngest son's birthday. You just can't get past a complete lack of interest.
And I thought my family was different... My middle sister has made life a bit interesting for us. We've thought she's been bi-polar for years (I'll spare you the details), and now, we're finding that she has dementia. Sigh...
