    Spitting sutures.

Went back to the dermatologist today. Tried to pop a zit last night and realized that the white thing pushing out of my face was not part of or produced by my body. Neither was the one underneath it. They were strings.

In what my husband calls an act of love, he has been trying to find me a dedicated computer for a project I'm looking at. After finding these white strings, I asked if his act of love could involve calmly evaluating what was coming out of my face. He was very even keeled about the whole thing, saying that these must be those sutures that are being absorbed by my body, insisting that he remembered the surgeon saying that this wasn't a big deal and I should call the office today to make sure.

I remember what the surgeon said differently. I remember his odd sense of humor. I remember him warning me against "little white worms" coming out of my face. I remember thinking that there were probably a number of people in the world who would be willing to give birth to an alien but if they were told it would be coming out through their face, they would probably all back off.

Sure enough, I called and was told to come down as soon as I could and they would fork me over to any provider and give me priority. Specifically, "that needs to be looked at". My husband immediately lost his cool completely and went right to "I can't believe they left a suture in your face!" I coughed and, in typical fashion, he made a completely illogical connection, demanding, "Are you OK!?" as if the suture had given me an infectious disease. This reminded me of the time I had a bad reaction to anesthesia and he wondered if the surgeon had given me Lyme Disease.

Turns out my body is not having the immune response to the sutures that it's supposed to which cause them to dissolve. The woman I saw clipped them back and told me that the skin on a person's face is thin so this happens but did want to make sure I had a followup appointment so who knows? Maybe the rest of them will try to come out. In the meantime, my husband is treating me as if I'm an invalid. I'm not sure why I need herbal tea but, hey, if he's willing to make it, why not? At one point I forgot what the diagnosis was called, asked him, saying, "I forgot what that's called" to which he responded, "I'll never forget. Just ask me." And, my favorite, "It's like they implanted whiskers in your face."

So there you go. Spitting sutures. The woman at the front desk who checked me out didn't know what they are but now you do. And, yeah, it's as unnerving as it sounds.

That's funny, I've never heard of that but, of course, when you look it up, there it is! Spitting stitches after Mohs surgery Of course, I'm scanning the article and rather than reading it as "absorbable sutures" I read it as "adorable sutures". I hope you have a very cute suture line!

Which reminds me, I thought maybe I'd had one, since I've seen them before, but I've never had sutures so maybe it was one of my beasts.

If your body won't absorb them as it should, won't there then be the potential for infection? This sounds kind of scary.

I admit that I'm not thrilled. My surgeon is on vacation this week so I'm going to get a hold of him when he gets back. The woman I saw who I hope was a doctor but introduced herself as Stephanie seemed intent on getting the strings back in there. She said the are would become inflamed if they were left sticking out. On the one hand, she was saying everything was OK but she also told me to start massaging the area and moisturizing it and I have been for six weeks so I don't know what that means.

It's coming out of my face again. Just one this time but the area is already irritated.

    Nothing is ever simple.

I had a dream once (probably after watching a horror movie) where I watched spiders emerging from a lump in somebody's skin (mine? don't remember).

This has brought that memory alive again.

Yeah, the recent novel There, There has a reference to spider legs coming out of a bump on one character's skin. Not something I liked imagining.

JD, did you ever get hold of your dermatologist? After 6 weeks I'd have thought the skin was healed up enough that maybe they could trim those suckers off. Isn't it annoying that these things seems to crop up on or right before a weekend?

I did like it. I would mention that there are numerous characters involved, each with a story line intermingling with other story lines. I listened to it on CDs so it was challenging to keep track of who each character was, especially if I didn't listen for a day or 2. I think it would be easier to keep track of people if you read the book, an actual paper book, so you could look back to see what was said about that person earlier in the story. It's not what you'd call an uplifting story, just sayin'
